Baffle in the sump

Hello all,

I am trying to find that if I add more baffle to my sump in order to increase water travelling distance. Will it provide any additional benefit.

Thank you,

baffles in sumps typically serve two purposes:

1. to set the water height in a specific chamber. if you have a skimmer section or refugium that you want to have a certain water level, your baffle height will dictate the water level in that chamber.

2. bubble traps. often you will see a series of two or three baffles laid out in an alternating fashion (top and bottom aligned). these are used to help trap bubbles that form either from turbulent water or skimmer output. reducing the amount that make it in to the display. this is largely an aesthetic choice. some people like micro bubbles, some don't.

i'm not really sure what you mean by "increase water traveling distance"?

could you maybe explain a little more what your thoughts on that?

well he wants the water to travel more distance. By adding baffles, the water will go up and down, up and down. Don't know why he wants that but that's what he wants.

Thank for the detail reply.

Traveling Distance: I mean that when you have more baffle the water need to travel up and down more. Suppose to pass one baffle the water needs to travel one foot, going down and than up. So if there is one more baffle water need travel another foot.

Many years back when I was setting up my system, Iread somewhere that when water travel more up and down, it provide efficient filtration and Crystal water without any sock or sponge. And the example was compared with the natural streams.

Other than reducing microbubbles it is not going to do anything for you. Having more "traveling distance" does not increase filtration. MondoBongo's post was spot on for the uses of baffles.

I have NO scientific knowledge, but as I think about it the flowing up and down may very well cause a settling out from the water column s lot of detrius.

Generally between baffles is high flow compared to other compartments so it is not going to settle there.

I was thinking the middle section of my sump the water enters on the bottom of 1 side and exits on the top 24 inches away.
