Bakpak 2R- Rio 600 or Maxi-jet 1200?

I am considering buying a Bakpak 2R skimmer. It comes with either the Rio 600 or Maxi-jet 1200. Which do you think is the better choice and why? Thanks

most people will disagree with me, but i think the 1200 is too big, and it causes too much turbulance within the bakpak.

FWIW, the CPR tech support website says the two pumps have equal flow rate and are equally effective. From what I have read, some people prefer one over the other due to noise issues or how long the pump lasts

this is any easy one and yes I do have it. THE MAXI JET 1200 only. I would NEVER put a RIO in my tank. They are known for wiping out tanks (do a quick search here). Maxijet is also know as the best most reliable small powerhead.

Search here some guy recently lost his entire tank only using a rio to mix new salt water in a separte container. It leaked various junk into the "fresh" new made up water and almost killed everything or did?

I used to have the Rio pump, and recently changed to the MJ1200. Honestly, I didn't see a big diff even if it was going from 200 to 290 gph.
However, if I was looking for a new skimmer in that price range, I'd look at the Coralife, ASM mini or even the Nano Remora.

if you want to "turbo charge" that skimmer you can do a very simple and effective mod like I did. I plumbed a wood air diffuser with and air pump. The diffuser sits right where the water and Venturi come in. You get twice the bubbles and performance with none of the bubbles getting back into the tank. You also have the option to turn of the Venturi part at night and it is silent but still working.

MJ are better powerheads. Rios used to have a tendency to explode and leak their oil into the water killing everything. Although they fixed this problem (apparantly), many don't trust them still.

Max-Jet. My friend has one on his Bak-Pak skimmer he hasn't done any maintenance on in 5 years. It's covered in Coraline and feather dusters and totally neglected, still runs great.
