Balistics punctatus/gold heart trigger HELP

Fly 75

New member
I need info on a Balistics punctatus/gold heart trigger/ bluespotted trigger. I am having a hard time finding any info on these fish. I have found a few different names for them. I believe they are the same as the west africa trigger but have been unable to find any info more than just basic stuff. They dont seem to be very common (which I like) and I would like to know if anyone has kept one and their opinions. Thanks!

First off, they are WAY too big to go in your 75g. These guys are similar to the Queen trigger. There are a few people with GHT's and have been pleased, but they say that they are next to the queen as far as aggression.

i have been told that they are similar to a queen as far as aggression by the fish nazi at faois he is a pretty reliable source as im sure you know being in clw he had one i was looking at.

Definately for the 265 gallon. I was just looking for any good info. Are they rare, care level, etc...? They are pretty sweet looking. I have the chance to get one and it looks better than any pics I have found. Absolutely amazing looking specimen.

Thanks! I think it would look amazing but I was hoping to get a little more info on this fish before I spent the money. It is out of a guys 500 gallon tank. This guys combined fish stock is odd and does not support much logic if you listened to most info available as far as compatability but he says worked without flaw. This is the only fish I am interested from his tank. It is a tough choice between the trigger and a red sea sailfin he had. The sailfin is beautiful but appears to have have quite the attitude. I just cant find much info except pictures and am hoping to gain a little insight before buying. I just dont want to miss this fish if it is a good choice. As an example, he kept this trigger along with 2 clown and 1 queen trigger in 1 tank, a full grown emperor and french angel together. There are more fish and all are adult size and I dont seem how he managed without problems. This "gold heart trigger" is insane looking. Please give me an idea of where to find more info....

Well, if it were me, I would go for it. I hear that they are very hearty like the majority of triggers. There is very little information about these guys as you can already tell, but they are stunning and not very common.

If this guy already had him in captivity and was doing well then go for it. I would be more concerned if it were straight out of the ocean.

Make sure to get a list of the food that this guy feeds the GHT.

I cant wait to see pictures.

I saw the trigger today and he is a sweet looking specimen. He seems to be pretty mellow. Ask John if you try it and it doesn't work out would you be able to bring him back in for credit on something else. I'm not sure what his policy is on that.

Yeah I bought the fish. I have a pretty good relationship with all the guys at Marine Warehouse if thats where you saw the fish. It looks awesome in my 265. So far it is a very mellow fish and was told it was pretty melow in the 500 gal tank. I was just looking for more info on this particular fish.

I have one in my aggressive tank with a 6" Adult Emperor Angel,a 4-5" Niger trigger,a 5" black damsel, a Brazilion dragon eel,Jeweled eel,and a Stout's Moray eel.

The Golden heart trigger is the Wimpiest of them all. As mellow of a trigger as I have seen. I have only had him a couple weeks now but the guy who I got him from had several in his system, and said that even the largest ones were laid back as well.

Yeah he seems like a wimp so far but thats fine with me. What all are you feeding yours 46bfinGA? He has been eating krill and also scoops up some mysis and blood worms. Do you use a feeding stick? I had a little incident today when I fed krill to the trigger and puffer. The puffer is a pig and they both ended up going after the same piece of krill. The trigger looks like he may have gotten nipped or bruised a very little on the lip. They get along fine other than eating time but the trigger seems to stay out of the way.

LauraCline: havent posted any pics on the forum yet. Can you tell me what FAOIS is and where it is at. Never heard of it...

Congrats on the new fish !!!
I have one it is a very sweet fish.
Simular to a queen trigger in behavior.
Just make sure tou deworm him as they and all triggers are prone to worms.
Mine was very skinny until I dewormed him now he is fat!

Here is a pic of mine when I first got it.

reefer334; great picture. I had never even heard of this trigger until now. Definately our favorite trigger. I have never heard of the worm thing. How do you tell and what do you do for it? He looks very healthy and does'nt appear thin. I have having a little problem feeding him because my puffer is so much of a pig. I think a couple feeding sticks will be my answer.

Fly- FAOIS = Fish and Other Ichty Stuff, one of the top if not THE top LFS in the area. The couple that owns it - John and his wife Jennifer- are super down to earth and really care about the livestock. They keep fish a few days before sale, they will not sell you something that is not suitable for your tank, and they will not sell any livestock that looks sick or diseased. His prices on dry goods are comparable to online and he does not sell anything that does not work. You won't find a coralife skimmer or snake oil for ich. Definately check it out. Headed West you go past marine warehouse on Hillsborough which becomes Tampa Rd. Right before it splits off to 580 to go to Clearwater, he is in the strip mall on your left. The street that runs behind the strip mall that you can turn on to get to it instead of making a u-Turn is called Fairfield. Address is: 105 Fairfield St. Oldsmar, FL 34677 (813)891-4291.

What all are you feeding yours 46bfinGA?

I have been feeding mine everything from Formula one pellets, flakes,Mysis shrimp,Raw shrimp with shells&tails, Nori Algae, plankton,etc....... I havent found anything he wont eat yet except fresh Salmon.

I dont use a feeding stick with mine. He is not shy when it comes to eating,he tries taking food out of my Brazilion Dragon's mouth and my Stout's Moray when I spot feed them with a feeding stick. I'm expecting my eels to take a big bite out of him one day.

Those pictures are awesome. Thanks for sharing. Mine does eat well but has a hard time competing with my puffer. Maybe it will get better after a few more days.

LauraCline: I know where you are talking about. I have been there and agree with you, very nice place.
