Ive got an aqua medic 48" 250 watt light x2 t-5 actinics x2.....one of the ballast is buzzing after being on for a few hours. Its about 6 months old. Is it fixable? any ideas? the mh ballast
Those are magnetic ballasts correct? I am sorry to say that magnetic ballasts will humm and buzz. You could replace it with an electronic ballast to kill the noise and reduce the heat from the ballast.
I ran those same ballast and they would buzz all the time. You might check how you mounted them to see if something is creating reverb and magnifying the sounds.
I bought an icecap electronic ballast recently and really like it, I think it was around 140.00 from the online venders. The sunlight supply ballast will need different connectors but the icecap and probably others will be already setup to connect right into your lighting.
I think your lights are probably HQI so the magnetic ballast is probably going to drive them a little harder than an electronic ballast so you might notice a change in color or they might seem a bit dimmer on an electronic ballast.
They sell electronic ballast at hellolights that are the exact same ones that come in TEK fixtures for around $45 each. I just recently bought some there and they are easy to install and work great and silently too.
I gotta tell you that you don't hear those things when you are at the LFS, but when you take it home every sound is amplified somehow and the wife can hear a pin drop you know.
If it was me I would have a tank in my bedroom because I love the sounds and it helps me sleep but I tried a 20g and lets just say it was whisper quiet and there were arguements for days.
