I'm hi-jacking too.....
my clam opens nice but it isn't happy....its close "reflex" when you wave your hand between it and the light is next to nothing...When the fish get close or brush it...it closes but not all the way. Mine looks like its the same kind as the "clam#1" pic. The guy at the LFS store didn't know what kind it was.
It is situated in a 110T tank with 2 -150 HQI lights (10000K) and 2 -96 actinic power compacts. Six month old bulbs. I have ordered 15,000K XM replacement bulbs, they will be here tomorrow. The clam is on top of the rocks, about 12" from the lights. I'm new to clams (I have had him for about 2 months now).....can you help me?
Is this kind of clam supposed to be in the sand? I can't put it that far down or it won't get enough light!

what makes you think its not happy?

closing because of shadows is normal

When I first got it ...it had a good close reflex.....it shut right up if you waved your hand between it an the light. Now it doesn't. It closes most of the way if a fish brushes against it though.
It hasn't attached it's self to the rocks either.

Woohoooooo! It finally worked!

I have one just like that and it is the same way. It used to close with the shadows but now it doesnt. At night it close all the way but during the day not. I think it is because it got used to the aquarium and fish. My opinion is that is not stressed anymore and it doesnt need to defend itself.

it looks fine. the clam is probably getting used to you testing its light response and isnt closing anymore, i wouldn't worry about it

Should I be concerned that it hasn't attached to the rocks?

looks liked it's wedged in a crevice. They usually prefer hard, flat surfaces that cover the byssal opening. If you want it in that spot, put it on the bottom of the tank and let it attach to a shell or terra cotta saucer, then move the saucer and attached clam where you want it.
