well i just posted something and nothing came up. can anyone tell me what they think of my set up. i just got a sweet deal at the LFS for a bamboo shark. i got a yellow and purple tang to go with it. the set up is a 55 and i was wondering what kind of cleaning crew i should get for this set up. how much live rock should i put in it too. thanks.

Well I replied to the last post and I will say the same on this one...it is up to you, but Tangs ans Sharks are notorious for needing a lot of swimming room and 55 gallons isn't that much space for those three fish much less anything else.

That's a horrific idea, I certainly hope you aren't planning on keeping those fish in that tank...It violates every rule in the book.

Lets keep this thread on track and offer constructive advice for sharkeydude. Comments like the above do nothing but incite ill feelings and provoke argument among members.

The tank is way too small - sharks including bamboo sharks need to have plenty of swimming room. Also, square tanks are difficult for them to manuever and a tank that small will create undue stress. You did not descibe any landscaping that you have but that will have to be minimal to allow swimming space and lack of aquascaping does not provide refuge for the fish to hide. Another issue is the filtration system needs to be adequate since waste can be generated quickly. A small tank with inadequate filtration will quickly lead to disaster. Tangs that are stressed tend to develop ick. I would strongly advise returning the bamboo until you have a bigger tank.

filtration is going to have to relie on snails and baleen. i put a powerhead in it but thats all i have the money for now

Without proper filtration you will not be able to keep any of these fish. My suggestion is to return the fish and get the tank established with proper filtration - otherwise you will lose the fish. You will be frustrated, spend a lot of money and worst of all the fish will suffer. A power head is not a filter it just moves water.

I definitely second returning the shark. The epaulette sharks need a minimum of 250-300 gallons (preferably long and wide) to reach their maximum size and live comfortably. Keep in mind that these fish typically reach lengths of around 40" or more, depending upon the species. Due to the sheer amount of waste they expel on a regular basis, effecient filtration is a must (preferably combined with strong protein skimming, though not absolutely necessary). That size tank is certainly pushing the limit for one tang, not to mention two. As an absolute minimum, I would get rid of one of the tangs--more likely the purple tang.

keeping a shark in a 55g is like putting a dolphin in a bathtub. all your doing is keeping it wet. even if its small now they grow quick! like Amphiprion said they need HUGE tanks to survive!! the tangs, well as long as they are small (2-3") and the shark doesnt eat them, they will be ok in a 55g for awhile. but you have max'ed your bio-load pretty much right off the bat. and once they start going you wont be able to keep up with the waste they produce.

Actually, without the proper filtration you have exceeded the bioload for that system. If you can describe your tank in detail we can offer some advice for equipping it properly

This is going to get ugly.

Your not keeping that shark for long in a 55, maybe 6 months then its dead. Sharks need large, highly filtered aquariums to survive in captivity. A 55 with a powerhead does not cut it. Try reading Scott Micheal's "Sharks and Rays" to figure out what your getting into.

no your not listening. i didnt catch these on trolling. I got it from my friend.
Like what would be the minimum for a tank size, i could try to build one in my garage.
