Banded Bamboo Cat Shark Inquiry

Hello everyone, I just purchased a Banded Bamboo Cat Shark egg about 2 1/2 weeks ago. I placed it inside my Aquarium and everything seemed fine except for a couple of days ago my egg starting floating. I did alittle further investigating and found that along with the floating egg their was a white mucos like film surrounding the egg accompanied by a nasty smell that is getting worse. I cleaned off the egg and scrapped the shell and saw and air bubble inside. Is my little shark alive or dead. Please help!

There should be a hole on one end of the egg. You need to tip it while submerged and get the air out. Might be the shark died from the air being in there. You should be able to see it swimming around in there. Keep us posted.

Hoc, thank you for the advice. I pushed the air out already and egg sank back to the bottom. Also when I pushed ou the air some white mucos came out along with it. I don't see anything swimming. Is it safe to assume that my Little Shark is dead.

You don't want to push or squeeze the egg at all as you can break the sack the shark uses for food etc. All you need to do is tip it and shake it a little. If you have something comin out of the egg and nothing moving you may be in trouble. You should be able to make out a little shark body in there which should be attached to a sack. You'll have to let it sit on the bottom of the tank and keep an eye on it. He prob won't move for a while after you handle the egg.

HOC, thank you for the advice. I will place the egg on the sand bed when I get home tonight. I will purchase another egg just in case my little Shark didn't make it. I really hope he does.

be patient, the worst thing you could do is purchase another egg and have 2 sharks in that small 180 gallon...

High Mortality

High Mortality

Shark eggs have a high mortality rate. Your better off spending more and buying a young shark. You can ask the pet store to feed it in front of you, to make sure it is eating.

After buying two eggs you probably could have spent the money originally on one young shark.

Well the Pet Shop I do business with no I spend my paychecks their so their giving me another egg that they have had for a while for free. I'm willing to take another chance. If it doesn't work out then I'm just going to order a Port Jackson from online or something along those lines.

White spotted bamboo.

White spotted bamboo.

Check out white spotted bamboos (chiloscyllium plagiosum).
They don't get quite as large as brownbandeds.
They do well in captivity. They are know to breed well in captivity.
They also retain a nice coloration as adults, unlike the brownbandeds which lose their bands as they grow and become a drab grey.

Another benefit

Another benefit

Another benefit of the white spotted is that they are tropical.
A Port Jackson is a cold water shark, generally requiring temperatures between 57 and 70 F.

You may want to purchase "Aquarium Sharks and Rays" by Scott W. Michael. This is a very handy reference guide to keeping aquarium sharks.

Good luck. Let me know how it goes.

If it has a foul smell and a white mucus coating.... I dont think thats a good sign... Keep you eye on it, You dont want to leave it in and foul the water just before adding a new shark.

I went to my Local Pet Store "Animabilia" in Wappingers Falls, New York. They replaced my Shark Egg for free and scrapped it so we could see if the little guy was alive. Their it was swimming around inside, it so small it looked like an Inch Worm. He is in my tank and happy now so I have to wait the full 180 days for it to hatch. Can't wait!

140-160 days.

140-160 days.

More like 140-160 days. It is highly influenced by water temperature. Best of luck, let us know how it turns out.
