Bangaii Breeding!

Mine held his for 29 days, but I didn't get to see any of the babies after he spit them out. I could see them moving around in his mouth, but that was it. I suspect they were all eaten or shredded by the powerheads. :(

I was going to try and save them, but couldn't really find the information I needed on how to raise them.

Spyderturbo007, I have two books to recommend on the subject one for breeding and rearing called, "The Breeder's Guide To Marine Aquarium Fishes" and the second has an ingenious plan on how to catch fry without doing any hard work. The plans for that device are in a book called, "How to Raise & Train Your Peppermint Shrimp"

Thanks JenC. I might have to take a look at those books. My wife noticed that my male didn't eat yesterday and has a mouth full of eggs.

I might give it a go this time, but I don't know what to do with them if I can raise them successfully. The LFS doesn't buy fish from hobbyists.

My Male is also holding, this is his first time as well. He's only been holding since 11/7. I was thinking of putting him into my display refugium after another 10 days or so to give him a nice peaceful resting area to bear the young, then hopfully getting him out before he eats any of them. There is plenty of Dragons Breath macro in there for the babies to hide, I may also make a fake urchin for them to hide out in as well.

Can anyone recommend a good source for BBS?

Hatching BBS yourself is the best, as you have fresh batch everyday.
Good luck to you.
mine holding 7times, still no luck, possible to many flow in the tank!!

I suggest looking for the banggai rescue book that was released at MACNA.

It'll recommend feeding Mussel mixed with salmon oil. That addition to the diet has shown an improvement in spawning and holding of the eggs.

The female will be ready to spawn every 2 weeks, so if you're comfortable artifically incubating the eggs, wait till day 7 or later for best results. I'd pull on day 7, giving the male a week to feed before the female is ready to spawn again. This will double the babies from a single pair.

Larval traps do not work on banggai. The larvae are not attracted to light when released. you're better off using a long spine urchin, or a fake urchin to gather the babies. If you still need the larval trap, google is your friend.

the banggai book also details how to skip live foods for baby banggai and how to raise them on pellets alone.

Wow, I didn't know they were endangered. Here I am with a breeding pair and no one that would buy the babies if I was able to rear them to adulthood. My LFS told me that they "don't buy fish from hobbyists". Now that I know they are endangered, it makes me :mad2: that they wouldn't want to do the right thing for the trade and buy from hobbyists.

Makes me want to try and raise these little guys even more, but I have no idea what I would do with them other than have a ton of little Banggai Cardinalfish in some 20g tanks. :sad2:

Their status is debatable. Their natural range could be threatened however they have become invasive in areas they've been introduced.

If you can offer market sized banggai for $5-8 each, your store should take them. I can buy banggai all day for $4.75 plus shipping. They have a large markup due to the losses associated, but if you seperate them, they rarely die.

I sell mated pairs of banggai that'll eat pellets which I raised in my club for $50/pair. They sell very fast at the frag swaps . Unfortunately I don't raise very many banggai lately

Chad - can you PM or Facebook me on the mussel- haven't gotten the book (yet), but curious as to how this is added? Small chunks? pureed? minced?
Thanks- Michelle

My pair of Kaudern's Cardinal decided to spawn yesterday.:lolspin:
This is my first breeding pair. What should I do? Isolate the male? What chance of survival do they have in DT?

I manage to take some pictures. Sorry about the quality. The Cardinals are in the back area of my 75 gallons tank, between the rocks, in a calm waters.

My male held for until 11/29. Unfortunately, all the babies got either eaten, or shredded by the power heads. :sad2:

I would have liked to raise them, but don't have any options as far as selling them.

My male dropped the eggs. First time spawning. Maybe he was scared of the consequences of having babies. :))
