Bangaii Cardinals Behavior

I have two Cardinals. After the lights go out, they tend to swim together a bit more than usual. As they swim around, they will both puff up their throats (one more than the other).

Any ideas what this behavior is?

I know this is a sign of mating, but I thought only males did it.

Hmm won't even say a word.....

I have had a female do the same so I think it's not a clear sign of the banger being gay

If thier hanging out together and there not killing each other your onto a good thing really. Mine took nearly two months before thier first spawning event.
