Banggai Cardinal eggs

I shot this video a little while ago and finally cut it down so as to place it on youtube. This is a part of the breeding process that I didn't realize happend. I have witnessed the females flirting, swishing and vibrating against the male before but this part I have always missed. I though the female deposited the eggs into the males mouth directly from her etc etc etc ... I was wrong but was lucky enough to catch what really happens on video. about 1:35 into video, the action happens. hope you find it as interesting as I did.

wow, this is an amazing video you got there, post pics as the pregnancy's going further, i love bangais, i have a female for 3 years now, she laid eggs once and now i added a new friend with her, hopefully it is a male !!!!!

Ron-
Awesome video- Thanks for posting it.

Allow me to point out a few things.
1)- the fish that had the eggs hanging from the vent-should be a female, yet the same fish scoops up the eggs in its mouth, while the other fish just sits there.
There are a number of reports of female banggais holding their own eggs, once a male is already carrying, but it doesn't appear to be the case in your situation.
2) there are a few othe rvideos of banggais transfering eggs, none of them show the female w/ the eggs hanging from her vent for seconds, never mind 1 minutes before eggs transfer. The egg transfer according to published literature occurs in 1/28th of a sec, and it occurs when the male banggai alines himself w/ th females vent
I'm not sure whats going on w/ your fish, and its a cool video, but it maybe an aquarium only situation. Never-the-less do you mind if link to this video?

Frank.. honored to be linked.. let me know where its going to be linked as I am sure it will be something of interest to me as well.

I watched her lay the eggs but missed the transfer to him on account of they were doing a lot of flirting after she placed them in her mouth. She did do a lot of poking at him on his underside waiting for him to do his part. This went on for about an hour and I got tired of holding the camera. They did in the end do a transfer though, that much I am sure. She has gone on to provide eggs to another male in the tank as well.. that surprised me as I was of the understanding that they were monogamous.

interesting you say that this may be a tank only thing. I will have to keep an eye open when the others start to flirt.

Anyhow, glad you enjoyed it. Thought you might.
