Looks like I've posted in several threads about my own Banggai's, so I guess I should start my own thread.....:love2::love2::love2:

Looks like 2 of my 3 pairs of Banggai Cardinal fish are holding eggs
and the 3rd females looks like she is full of eggs!

I guess you could say today is breeding day in the fish room!

Yes I am.. we have (3) mated pairs of Bangaii's........

We also have a pair of Black Ice and Black Snowflakes......
So to total it all up
(5) pairs of Clown fish
(3) pair of Bangaii
And I'm certain that my green chromis are spawning too... I'm always finding an eggs mass floating in the water. Or maybe it could my Lyretail Anthias....Who know really....

Sad news this morning, this male decided to spit the eggs yesterday... :sad2:

I have no idea why he spit them, there is no other fish in the tank to stress him out.... He had a mouth full too, maybe too many..

My male in my display tank is still holding his eggs. It's just not easy catching a fish in a 96"x36"x24" full stocked SPS tank....

Yesterday I went to the LFS for some supplies, they had a customer who was breaking down his 120g tank and had 3 LARGE Banggai... So I look at them for a while, they looked very healthy, so I ask the owner to grab one so I could sex them.... the customer had 2 males and 1 female... So we separated them into male/female in one system and the other male by himself.

I asked the customer how much he wanted for the pair, he was so overwhelmed that I was able to tell them apart, he said you can all 3 for FREE!

Talk about being at the right spot at the right time!... But we both know nothing comes free... I have to purchase another tank, sand and live rock....LOL...

So now I have 4 pairs, and will purchase a female to mate up with the lonely male...making 5 pairs!!!! super excited about this!
Banggai's are one of my favorite fish!!!

I have 4-Bangai Cardinals in my 180g reef. I believe 2 of them have paired off. Should I try to catch the pair and put them in a 30g tank by themselves or try and catch all 4 and put them in the 30g and see if 2 of them pair off?

Didnt mean to hijack.

I have a new pair (6 months in tank) that had paired off. Came back from 5 day holiday yesterday and noticed the males mouth was jacked up, and then he kinda popped his mouth open a little, and it was full of eggs. Not sure how many days going since inception. Female is eating, and as expected, male is not. In my DT, and they have been hanging around sebae anemone they are hosting with. I am going to pick up a LS urchin for good measure tomorrow.

Planning on keeping in tank as it is pretty low stress. Other fish include one lyretail anthia, two pairs of clowns, royal gramma, yellow wrasse, and cleaner shrimp. Gonna guess that 20 days started about 5 days ago. I undstand that they mouth breed them live, and that the young stay in males mouth for a few days, correct? I have access to Rotifera and have a brine shrimp hatchery I can fire up.

Any suggestions?

Sincerely,

David

How long have you had the group?
Have you noticed any aggression with the other 2?
You may have 3 females and 1 male.

No worries on hijacking.....we are all here to help each other.

If you place a LS urchin in the system, the male will release the fry towards the urchin and the fry will stay very close to the urchin... It's pretty cool actually :)
You will want to try remove the fry into a small floating nursery, this will make feeding them soo much easier.... plus it keeps them safe....
I have been successful with feeding the fry BBS....
If this is his first time holding eggs, he "may" not hold this clutch to full term...
but, dont worry, its normal... He may do this 2-3 more times before he holds them to full term..Just make sure you feed a little more mysis shrimp to put some weight on the male... This will help him hold the eggs to term...

Thanks for advice. I picked up a long spine urchin today from a fellow reef club member here in S.E. GA. Researched on the LSU, and some folks said there were some issues with eating polyps, etc... Any worries here as DT is a mixed reef tank?

Father still holding on to eggs, and the female is adamant at steering him around and is slightly agressive to other tank mates.

Another of our reef club members who is agressively breeding clowns has offered some live food when the time is near. Is there a preferred time of day that the young are ejected by male?

Fingers crossed and hopeful on bringing some new Bangalli's into the world.

Sincerely,

David

Yes, I have experiance the LSU eating LPS especially zoas!
If you don't have enough algae in the tank, they will eat nori or zoas!!!

Sounds like the pair is doing fine. From my experiance I have found them in the tank in the early morning, mid afternoon and the evening.
I usually strip the eggs from the male around day 22.... I hope that helps.

You live close to us btw.....

Yesterday I noticed my male Banggai in the 65 tall holding eggs again... Hopefully he wont spit this batch out. I miss having baby Banggai's.....
My new pair is still a little shy. So I have no idea when they will start their breeding cycle again...

My male is holding eggs again.. I hope he hold them to term this time.. It's been MONTHS since he held a clutch to term... He's been spitting them around day 4-5... :(

Since the male is fasting during the 'holding' time, would it be worthwhile to separate him from the female for a while to get him 'fattened up'? Perhaps he would be better able to endure the fast?

He's FAT already.. :p

I have the pair in with our Seahorses so there is no pressure on finding or eating food. No one to chase or bother him in that tank either...
I truly wish I could figure it out... I think I'm going to contact Matthew Wittenrich and see what he has to say...
I think He's just not interested in holding eggs any longer...

Looks like he spit them out again...

Just in. Our pair has been back at it, and the male is of tonight holding eggs. For certain he ate yesterday, as I fed him myself and he ate mouthfuls. Noticed female closely chasing him as well since last night, and he did not eat tonight. Had the "jacked up" jaw again that is indicative of him holding eggs. Caught a couple of glimpses of them as well.
One thing I have noted as confirms. All of the four documented couplings we have seen happen at New Moon. Anyone else put these moon cycles to the test?

One the question of holding eggs, and having food and others in tank. Would it not make sense to hold the male in a tank without other animals and not offer any feelings? Seems, at least to me, that having food around and watchng the others eat is just too much temptation. Kinda like me around a group of friends drinking beer's! Kinda hard to resist....

Just my thoughts. Day 1 and counting. Fingers crossed!

Sincerely,

David
