Banggai Journal

Hi how the daddy doing has he still got eggs I just noticed today mine have started again but so far I have never had him go past day 5 so fingers crossed this time . All the best :)

Male spit then out again, this time at day 9. Seriously thinking about moving male to separate tank next time.

Sincerely,

David

My 75 gallon tank only has Banggai fish, corals, snails, hermits, and a large red serpent star. I let the babies stay in the dad's mouth until full maturity and then net the babies from all over the tank. Once in the the breeder home, they having been doing well with baby brine shrimp. I lost all but 3 of my 17 fish to a large red serpent star which got into the breeder home. The starfish is now in the sump where he will remain for good! I have learned that the other Banggai will eat and attack the babies even if I feed the adults daily. There is no option for me to keep them in the main tank for now. I tried an artificial urchin with no avail. How many days should I wait before putting the babies back into the main tank? I want them to be safe from being harmed by the adults? When only a few weeks old they do not have the awarness of how to hide in the rocks to keep from being attacked. At about a month old, I guess they should be faster and more capable to swim away and hide if they need to.

Sad news this morning, this male decided to spit the eggs yesterday... :sad2:

I have no idea why he spit them, there is no other fish in the tank to stress him out.... He had a mouth full too, maybe too many..

My male in my display tank is still holding his eggs. It's just not easy catching a fish in a 96"x36"x24" full stocked SPS tank....

Yesterday I went to the LFS for some supplies, they had a customer who was breaking down his 120g tank and had 3 LARGE Banggai... So I look at them for a while, they looked very healthy, so I ask the owner to grab one so I could sex them.... the customer had 2 males and 1 female... So we separated them into male/female in one system and the other male by himself.

I asked the customer how much he wanted for the pair, he was so overwhelmed that I was able to tell them apart, he said you can all 3 for FREE!

Talk about being at the right spot at the right time!... But we both know nothing comes free... I have to purchase another tank, sand and live rock....LOL...

So now I have 4 pairs, and will purchase a female to mate up with the lonely male...making 5 pairs!!!! super excited about this!
Banggai's are one of my favorite fish!!!
one ? how were u able to sex them? by head shape?
