Bannerfish in reef

if any one reading this wants to see the difference, go to that site above, the wet web media one, there you can plainly see that the longfin is not what is pictured above, it clearly identifies the above pictured as schooling bannerfish.

Clearly you don't read them either because LiveAquaria SPECIFICALLY states that the fish is Heniochus acuminatus, attaches it to that picture... To the contrast the fish that you claim we all have Heniochus singularis is featured on Marine Center and is NOT the same fish at all, not even close.

Wikipedia's Heniochus acuminatus:

Yours looks like acuminatus, judging by the anal fin, the edge of the black stripe in front of the tail, and 11 dorsal spines....not to mention, the mouth opening is more of that beak shape, as opposed to the "<" shape like on diphreutes, zoster and pyramid butterflies.

yes it is, and doug, i clearly stated that i was mistaken on labeling them singularis. wet web media proved my point, the one in the pictures is the schooling banner. I do not believe the one in picture is a longfin, from all my teachings and research that is my opinion. lol, this was a good debated thread!

So the acuminatus is the one I have and is a true long fin and is not reef safe ???

So....is the fish at the top of the page Reef Safe? and would it shaol/school in the home aquarium?

Diphreutes are supposed to be more reef safe than acuminatus. They get large. I've seen them school in large public aquaria, that's about it. I wouldn't count on this happening in a small home aquaria, though I suppose it's possible....

well i just gave up on the poormans moorish idols after loosing two of them years ago and now this poorman is trying the real thing from divers den and doing well sofar..i have had better luck with the real moorish idol than i did with the heniocus varitey of fish... but then i cant keep a yellow tang to save my life but i got a thriving powder blue tang so go figure...

Hhahaha nice agreeive... I have found my heniochus to be one of the easiest thing to take care of... In my reading, the angle of the anal fin is a big issue in IDing this fish, yet all the fish we have in our tanks seem to be juveniles and thus this fin differentiation is difficult. Mine doesn't pick and I am happy with him.

Nope mine is not agressive at all... him and the purple tang that i got in the same order are swimming buddies and they get along with the scribbled angel i got yesterday...infact all 3 of them slept together last night and the only agression i have seen is an ocasional tail wag by the purple tang toward the scribbled angel but no physical contact and it only lasts about 5 seconds then its over... i payed 80 bucks for my moorish idol from divers den..i could have gotten one lots cheaper but i wanted one who had ben qt and was known to be eating prepared/frozen foods so i payed the higher price

i see, man, my freakin pearlscales, one is peaceful and the other isnt, i went through 2 sailfins that were both aggressive so i took them back, and replaced him with the pearlscales and one of them is, i wish fish could just get along, my banners though are very peaceful, i have noticed them trying to clean other fish which i read is normal for juveniles.

I caught mine and put him in my sump for the night, he is going back tomorrow ... he has been nipping at everything in my tank.

mr penguin

If that's your pictured above, I have the same fish. Like dwarf angels and many other reef fish, they graze the rock constantly with no harm, Mine looks identical to that picture and is in my reef for nearly 18 months now.

This is a recent pic of my HB

Ha! I read this thread this morning and bought a Bannerfish today! I got the "schooling bannerfish" variety. He's eating Rod's just fine. Actually, the LFS fed tanks holding 4 differernt ones, and I got the one that ate the best.

I named him David Bannerfish.

This is a confusing thread. I have wanted one of these fish for a long time, but didn't get one for fear of him eating my corals. It seems like everyone has different ways of identifying them. So is there a defini
