Barebottom vs. Sandbed

pros/cons? Just wondering what some of you guys think about these methods... I am setting up a new tank soon and I am considering going BB...

There is a debate on this subject at least once a week. You're best bet is to do your research and make your own decision.

One pointer though, it's a lot easier to add sand than it is to remove it.

Sand looks better but more work to maintain. Barebottom allows more flow less maintneance. Now I'm getting out of here!!

Chris

go to google use the advanced search and search on BB and DSB and tell it to look only on reefcentral.com and I am sure you will turn up everything you could ever want to know on the BB VS DSB debate.

hhhmmmmm... interesting, hopefully I din't just start WWIII...
I t will probally get locked before it gets that bad;)

Long and short of it in my opinion: A tank with a sand bed will be more forgiving as the sand will suck alot of nasty stuff in (this will depend on your husbandry) but you will have to replace the sand eventually or you will have problems with it leaching phosphates/nitrates thus algae problems will ensue. This can take years before it happens. BB tanks rely exclusively on your filtration. Typically this means less live rock with lots of flow to direct detritus to your filtration system. Bad husbandry and/or improperly set up BB tanks will go south on you very quickly.
