Would getting two Bartlett anthias be ok or do they have to be in large groups?

I started with 3 about a year and a half ago. Lost one to carpet surfing :(
It's better to start with 3 or 4 because then the males aggression can be split up rather then focusing on just one. Although i dont witness too much aggression the female spends half the day in the rockwork while the male is always out and about.

I got a single one & it's been great for almost a year now. She's in with my single male lyretail. They seem to be fine with just one.

I also agree that a harem doesn't always stay a harem. I have never started with just two, but I wonder if one was female and the other male...would they stay that way?

Not a Bartlett, but I've had two (male/female) Lyretails and they rarely stayed together, the female tried to stay away from the male, cause he would lightly chase her. I also had a trio (1 male/2 females) Lyretails and similar results, male would swim in the open and female stayed in opposite corners. Had single Lyretail males twice and both times they were fine.

I was worried when I added the Bartlett to the tank with the single male Lyretail, but he never really even bothers the Bartlett and both are always out in the open. Can't say this is the normal, but it worked for me. Good luck, they bring nice coloration to the tank and are very active.

I've tried three bartletts, three different times and ended up with 0. Now I have a single lyretail.
