Base for pillar formations

Was wondering what type of base people use for those that have there scaping pillar style? In the past I just used a rather large and heavy base rock drilled with acrylic rod but Im trying to limit the amount of rock on the sand. TIA

I elevated my large base rocks with acrylic rods. I drilled holes in the bottom rocks about half way through and then stuck some 3-4" acrylic rods in the holes. This keeps them out of the sand while still giving me a good base to stack from.

You can also drill your rocks with a drill bit, in order to slide 1/2" PVC through.

This time around I'll be using fiberglass rods. After a while the acrylic rods get brittle and break which resulted in a few land slides.

gold stripe, what size pvc did you use for your set up?

1/2 CPVC. Its a little smaller than regular PVC. Used a 5/8 masonry drill for the rock.
