Base rock for clams in the sand

I have some clams in the sand that will need a piece of live rock to attach to eventually. I've only had the clams for a short time, but I am afraid that they may attach to the bottom glass of the aquarium. Can I bury a piece of live rock in the sand for them to attach their foot? If so what size rock should be used? Any alternatives to this would be appreciated as well . . .

I use a piece of plain white tile from home depot for mine - is that OK to use mbbuna?

PRETTY GIRLS

Here is a picture of the girls. Hard to take top down pics with a bow front. How do you get those awesome top down pics? I have a support truss over the middle of the tank, so I would have to submerge my digital camera {Camedia D40 zoom} to get a good TD view.

Tiles are a brilliant idea! Custom fit with out having to find that "perfect" piece of live rock. Where do you get half clam shells? That sounds like a good idea as well. Maybe a combo of the two with superglue/epoxy? These gals do like to burrow, right?

BTW my clams are girls :smokin:

no glue needed. they will grab on just fine on there own.

Clams are both boys and girls(hermaphroditic)

If you do decide to go the tile route (of course Italian is preferred  ) be sure to let them sit in a bucket of old tank water for a week or two - just to let them leech-off any chemicals that may have been on them for finishing, and to get them to adjust to the pH of the water - might be overkill, but better safe than sorry

Good call on the h2o soak. I was refering to gluing the empty half shell to a piece of tile, then ever so gently placing my babies in their new "crib".
My clams are still girls, despite all this scientific trickery you speak of. :o)

Well, I guess techinically my clams have no sex as of yet. I'm guessing that they are just babies. Then come to find out they are male first, then female {well they aquire "female gonads" and become hermaphrodites}. At least that is what Elizabeth Lukan says . . .

"When Tridacnid clams first reach sexual maturity, they are male and then become simultaneous hermaphrodites about a year later. This makes tridacnids protandric.

Clams reach full sexual maturity at approximately 5 to 7 years according to The Reef Aquarium Volume One. But, according to The Secret Of The Giant Clam by Annie Mercier and Jean-Francois Hamel that appeared in Freshwater And Marine Aquarium's May 1996 issue, sexual maturity is reached in 3 to 5 years. Each species matures at a different age. Some clams become sexually mature as males within two years and will then gradually acquire female gonads.

Even though clams have male and female sex organs at maturity, the release of sperm and eggs are separate. This is to prevent self-fertilization, although it is not guaranteed to do so. Usually, sperm is released first and then the eggs."
