Base rock locally?

I wanted to ask if anyone had seen some really nice base rock(cheap dead dried out LR type stuff) any where locally. I keep thinking my new tanks would be so much better off with some more LR, but my budget just will not go that far and after listening to a "Talking Reef" podcast on saving money I was reminded of using base rock. I have some new LR I purchased from Dr. Mac that would see the tanks pretty well and spread all the denitrifying bacteria, coraline algae, and all that food stuff. I just need more real estate for the little critters to grown onto in my healthy established system.

Jon;

There is(was) a place in West Chester (I consider that to be local, not sure if you do) that I know of. The base rock was in the neighborhood of 0.80 - 1.10 per lb.

Since they are not a sponsor (or even deal in SW, let alone reef), I'm not sure if I can mention the name. I'm not even sure if they still exist. Let me do a bit of sniffing out, and I'll get back to you @ the next meeting. Or PM me your phone # and I'll give you a call.

Thanks Ted, I appreciate it. I usually do not mind a drive that far, but it would have to be some nice rock to be worth the drive. After the holidays and my recent trip to Dr. Mac's that's a bit of gas money to be spending. I love a road trip, but with gas prices recently and my SUV.... Thanks again though Ted, definitely let me know if you're sure they are still around have have some good rock.

No one else seen any? I may have seen some at TPP(that pet place), but it has been a while since I have been there and I never really paid attention to the dried out rock before unless it was for a reptile tank I was setting up.

Jon

TPP always carries plenty of base rock of every type and size you can possibly imagine. Since they also sell larger pieces, I prefer them over many who sell base rock. There price though is average compared to most stores in the $1.75 - $2.50 per lb range.
If savings is of importance to you, Ted's source may be a better choice. Closer also.

I need to purchase substrate and a glass top as well though in preparation for taking on the snowflake I will hopefully be taking on very soon. TPP probably has the best selection and prices as far as that stuff goes so with out an extensive search I knew I was going to go there for that stuff.

BTW if anyone is in Newark and would like me to pick up something for them let me know soon.

Jon;

How soon? TPP is having a 30% off one item every Tuesday (starting the 9th, I think) Jan and Feb. I might be going up a couple of times. Could be a carpool possibility in there.

Don't know if I can post it here but I'm gonna try.....

SeaCorals.com has some nice base rock --25lbs for $36.01 shipped. And it was a true 25 lbs.

Craig

Jon,

How many lbs do you think you're looking for? I will donate the eel's favorite piece of live rock (unattractive, but live) if it helps.

Joe

Joe that would surely help. I wanted to ask you what you have been feeding it, or what it has been eating.(I know some of the animals I have steal more expensive food from other animals or even pick off other animals) I have a really cool piece of LR that would make a great cave for it however it does not fit in the tank I was planning on putting it in.

ronert you sure it start tomorrow? I may go tomorrow, but I was planning on just going up with my gf. Perhaps next time either of us go up we can carpool. I would surely be up for conserving gas and money.

That would be awesome though if I could bring his fav piece of LR as well then perhaps he will be more comfortable. I think he will be the first inhabitant of the tank so it can get comfortable. (only other fish addition may be my one eyed French Angel)

Craig thanks for being brave to give me that info. I would like to pick out the pieces for my tank though. Sometimes being cheap and borderline ocd conflict, lol.

Jon

Where did you find this out? I couldn't find out any info on their website.

BTW I am not sure if you guys know or if I am supposed to say, but someone told me that www.thatpetplace.com is changing to a new format sometime early this year.

TPP sends out a mailer to those who sign up at there store. Usually you get a mailer at least once a month featuring there sales or sale products.

if you don't have a mailer, tell them either going in or just before checkout ... you can sign up and use it the same day ....
