Base rock prep???

I just recieved some base rock from a friend. This rock was in his neighbors tank before it cracked and got out of the hobby. I think it might of been live rock at that time.

My questions is should I clean this before using it in my saltwater tank?

If so what is the recomended process?

The reason I am asking is it has an smell to it and I don't want to hurt my tank which is already up and running.

Thanks,

Mark

Yes, I would recommend cooking the rock before placing it in your tank. You can do a search here on RC for more info on cooking rock.

If you're setting up a new tank, I would suggest just rinsing it a bit and then putting it into the tank.

My tank has been set up for almost 2 months and my fish and soft coral have been in it for almost 2 weeks.

I would apprecieate more suggestions on how to prep this base rock so I wont hurt my fish and corals.

Thanks,

Mark

I would rinse it with some water, and then "cure" it in a tub with a heater and a powerhead. After a week or so of zero ammonia, you're safe to put it into your tank, IMO. You might never see any ammonia, but better safe than sorry, IMO.
