Base Rock using it or not?

Hey all,

Has anyone used base rock from a company called Marcorocks.
Saw them on ebay and the company seems to have very good high grade remarks.

I am interested in finding out if any one who used this rock and eventually learned that the rock leached phosphates or anything else over time.

I really want to add some rock to my new 180 setup but want to save money by adding some base rock from a reputable source.

My tank is already cycled. LR as well. I have too many sps's, corals and fish. I need rock to add to my new 180g. The display will also include my current LR scattered throughout. I can't afford a cycle as this will surely kill my animals.

Base rock is affordable but it seems it still has to be cured somewhat.

What do I do? How many lbs can I add and be safe?

I may have to go to LFS and get cured LR to avoid any problems. But that means paying more LR.

gotosleep,
I looked at your link thanks! Someone else also mentioned reefcleaners.org. Their rock though requires no cycling. BRS says that you should at least cycle for three weeks.
In either case I feel that I wil run the rock in some old sw from a water chnage of my tank. Monitor levels and cycle to just be sure for about 2 weeks.

Thanks JonP but his LR is covered with xenia, I don't want that.

I thought you were looking for base rock? It said he is selling base rock underneath the LR for $0.50 a pound.

i did my tank with base rock from reefcleaners.org.

no cycling necessary. as far as i can tell, all this
sort of florida base rock comes from the same area,
where they found an old (millions of years) reef inland
where it is cheap and easy to excavate.

the rock is utterly dead havng seen no ocean for
a long time. i bought 3 boxes (40lbs for $100 delivered)
and all teh rock was clean enough to put straight in the tank.
(your mileage may vary.) in addition, the reefcleaners
rock can be tailored to your request (i did one with
larger flatter pieces and one with pieces sort of 8x3x3)
and that worked out fairly well.

i've had my wife look at several different kinds of rock
and she has indicated we should stick with just this
kind of rock for looks alone.

I would guess that if you added a small quantity of base rock to your system at a time you will prevent your tank from cycling again.

I ordered a couple hundred pounds of Pukani Eco rock from BRS and couldn't be happier. While the rock is physically very clean, I did still soak the rock in RO water for about a week. The water did turn a very dark yellow, and began to smell like the ocean. While I didn't test the RO water for phosphates, I would guess it was very high.

Once again the rock I received from BRS is outstanding. I would definitely soak the rock for about a week, and add it in small quantities to your system.

Thanks guys for your input! I will be ordering and soaking/cycling from more than likely reefcleaners.

Thanks
Juan
