Basket Star hitchhiker

Hi guys,

I ordered several gorgonians from TB Saltwater (love TBS). One of the gorgs came with a basket star on it. It looks really amazing, like a starfish created by Tim Burton. I know they are not suited well to captivity though.

I have asked everyone at my LFS for husbandry suggestions, but no one has experience with them. Currently dosing phytoplankton, but I am not sure what else to do for it. Any suggestions? Does anyone have experience with these?

I have had it for a couple weeks now. It always stays on its gorgonian, and seems to spread out its arms more at night.

They are night time feeders. DT's phytoplankton is the best choice. Squirt some at it after lights out when it's fully extended. Unfortunately most of them don't survive for long in captivity.

I believe that your best chance lies with Fauna Marin's SeaFan particles and ultramin, if the basket star feeds like the crinoids (though I'm not sure that's the case). Seems sensible that an animal living in a gorgonian might like the same food as said gorg. Coral Frenzy and New Life Spectrum Reef Microfeeder would also be likely to induce a feeding response. But watch out - those all are some of the most concentrated nutrient expanders you can give your reef, and you could very rapidly cause a ton of other problems. You might target feed it one or more of those foods with the power off or with a cut-off bottle around it to give it the highest concentration with the least effect on your reef.

They are NPS, and need fed several times per day. The slightest change in water quality will kill them. Withen the first few DAYS they will begin losing arms resulting in their immediant death. They are crinoids just like feather stars if you're family with their difficulty and success..

Had to fix a few spelling errors :D

If you had it for weeks that's amazing actually as I don't know too many who had them a few days.
