Basslets with firefish????

I'd say no. Basslet's aren't what I'd call "aggressive". They're just territorial, as many fish are. I'm assuming this is a cube tank, which leaves even less room to distribute territory, so again, I'd say pick one and stick with it. Firefish and basslets occupy the same part of the tank (the rockwork) and a basslet will win every time.

Is my Helfrichi Firefish unusual then? It is out in the middle of the tank in the water column all day long. Has been for 2 years.

Small liopropoma basslets, royal gramma, and yellow assessors would all be acceptable basslets to house with a firefish in that size tank.

Marshall, my experience with firefish is they are out and about as well.

I have a Royal Gramma with a Purple firefish in a 30 gallon (24x24). Though the aggression from the Gramma is not harsh or constant it is there and enough to keep my firefish far from being comfortable. I will be removing the gramma.

That has not been my experience . I kept a firefidh and gramma together in a 10g without issue.

I have found that the taller you aquascape the tank works better. All the grammas I have kept liked being higher up in the rockwork, whereas the firefish accepted anywhere there was an adequate bolt hole.

I have a firefish, yellow assessor and a royal gramma.
They could care less about each other.
The assessor has no aggression at all.

The aggression is not very bad but it is enough. Prior to the Gramma being introduced the Firefish was very mobile and outgoing in the tank, since the addition he has become more withdrawn and stays in the farthest corner away from the Gramma. I also have to basically target feed the Firefish as well to insure he gets enough to eat.
A Yellow Assesor was my first choice as I have several in the past and know how mellow they are. They have become too expensive so I took a shot with the Royal Gramma.

My Royal Gramma coexists with a Maroon Clown and a Lawnmower Blenny, should let you know the aggression there. Gramma on the left of the tank and Clown to the right and the Blenny goes where ever he wants.
