I just went barebottom in my 29 gallon sps tank, also added a 20 high sump, internal overflow, ehiem 317g return pump, starboard, and a euroreef skimmer rated for 80 gallons. My lighting consists of 175w xm 10000 (8hrs), plus 130 w pc acintic (12hrs) with a turnover of about 40X flow.

This tank was sumpless before with a tunze nano skimmer that just was'nt keeping up. I realize all these changes are going to lead to short term problems that I'd like to minimize.

I have 2 questions for those that have gone through this.

How much should I cut the photoperiod?
Should I not run the skimmer 24/7?

I'm also setting up a 29 gallon. I don't see a problem with your photoperiod and I will be running a skimmer 24/7 if that helps any.

I would say: cut the photoperiod in the begining, (4 hours or so hilide normal photo with atinics) then slowly ramp back up to minimise stress from all the changes. Stop ramping the light up if you see bleaching, wait a while then try a little more.

I am noticing a bit of a trend, some of the BB people that initally lowered their photoperiods due to bleaching are ramping them back up in search of growth, and things arn't bleaching when they do it. I am doing the same thing, but it is too early to tell because I only upped it 8 days ago.

Always run the skimmer, and set it very wet.
