If you want to solve this remotely:
Can you post pics?
Do you have two pipes that lead from your display tank to your sump, or do you have thee?
One of the pipes should be restricted with a valve, and the other (one or two) not restricted at all?
The one that is restricted should terminate below the level of the water in the sump.
The valve should be adjusted closed so that no air is sucked into this pipe at all, but only so closed that a trickle of water flows through one of the unrestricted pipes. Not a lot of water, but just a trickle.
So another requirement is that the "start" opening of the restricted pipe is lower vertically than the opening of the unrestricted pipe.
The pipe that is unrestricted should terminate just above the surface of the water in the sump.
