Bean overflow not working

1: that's an old pic, the open channel is indeed pointed down.
2: there are more elbows in the siphon line than the others, and it's longer. I have a feeling this is the issue.
3: the siphon elbow is indeed very close to the bottom of the box.
4: the valve is on the siphon tube. The others are only unions.

I can get it to work if I suck start the siphon pipe from the sump, but it won't start on its own. It keeps filling and emptying the overflow box.

Sounds like you need to close the gate valve a bit.

Yes you're not restricted enough to maintain a full drain pipe, it builds pressure as it fills, if the ball valve is not closed down enough the pressure will cause it to flush to the sump emptying the pipe.

You should have the main drain valved and full at all times the E drain should have the slightest trickle if any water at all in it.

It's a balancing act.

Even with the siphon valve closed all the way, the open channel is enough flow to make the box drain and fill.

No isht. I hope so. That's exactly how the Bean is designed to work. If the full siphon gets blocked, the open channel should be able to handle the flow. And the 3rd emergency is just that. A final ace in the hole. That's the improvement over the herbie.

Get the full siphon going. If it's draining the entire overflow box, bump the gate valve closed a touch and watch what happens. If you need to close it more yet, do it. Eventually it'll get to the point it can't handle all the flow and it will start to trickle down the 2nd pipe. That's it. You're done. The goal is to get the tiniest flow possible through that 2nd pipe. Full siphon handles 98% of the flow and pipe #2 handles 2%.

Well what I'm saying is that no matter how much I open or close the ball valve on the siphon channel, the open drain keeps sucking the box dry.

It makes me think that the flow from the return isn't enough...

I wonder if putting a valve on the open pipe would change anything.

Sounds like your open pipe is full siphoning, meaning the airline is below the water level. Seems as though you want the airline end to be above the water level and just below the Edrain level.

Yes. Yes you are nuts. Of course the Bean has a siphon. It's EXACTLY like the herbie, but with the addition of an emergency pipe. Main flow is in the center pipe, restricted just enough to begin flow in the right pipe. Once a tiny amount of flow is in the right pipe, that's it, you're done.

If you'll read through the Bean write up, I think he mentions how the gate valves on the other pipes are unnecessary, but he added them anyway.

And those of you that have the problem =James= had, try blowing in the air tube for a couple seconds. That should be enough to break the siphon in the open channel and start it in the full siphon channel. Then open channel will then pick up whatever slack is leftover.

Ya you busted me I went to the bean animal site and read up on it...then edited the post...lol. I run a half BE, with no siphon...dead quiet too and safe.
