Is there any advantage/disadvantage to using a Beckett style skimmer (like MRC) as compared to a skimmer that uses a submersible pump with an impeller that generates bubbles (like the Sedra/ASM combo)?
It's all personal preference. Some say that Becketts use more electricity, but the watts per volume of REAL capacity is mostly equal. There are lots of threads discussing both, so I would recommend read and study, then buy. There are lots of great skimmers in all categories, Beckett, needlewheel, downdraft.
I'm using a custom (my measurements) dual Beckett, because I think I get more for my $$$. I will be running 2250 gph through mine.
If you use a quality manufacturer, there's no bad skimmer. You can go look at people's systems and will see great results with all types.
A Dart needle wheel skimmer was my second thought.
