becteria working in fresh water?

I am setting up a fresh water tank for my son. I grabbed some ceramic rings from my sump and put them into the filter of the new fresh water tank, will the bacteria work in fresh water? BTW does protein skimmer works in freshwater tank?

Nope to both. The bacteria is different between FW and salt. I think skimmers don't work because the surface tension of FW is lower than that of SW.
