Ben's new 180 gallon peninsula tank

kirstenk- with this heat wave it has terrible!

patricklong- I sent EcoTech an email asking them about your concern and strangely enough I have not heard back :hmm2: Very odd for that to happen

kalakuhan - I do have a few dolly's that I plan to put to use  My wife and I decided to go the staining route. Since everything in our house is stained cherry/dark mahogany, we are going to find something similar to what is inside the house. I did not want to paint the stand since it is going to be a big piece of furniture and we want it to look like furniture.

Thanks for the comments everyone, I will post updates as they come, it's just too stink-in hot out right now.

Ben,

Did you ever finish the project? The concept is great that you hide the plumbing in the tower and don't have to molest the wall of your house. My next build will likely follow along something like this.

I have not yet. I should have more photos to post in the coming days. The tank should be up in a week, about 80% up. Should be 100% up in about a month. It sucks it has taken about a year to get it complete.

After almost a year of building this stand then deciding to move, the new 180 gallon is set up. Later this afternoon I will add live stock. I will post photos tonight of the progress. The only thing that I have yet to start is the hanging shadow box that will host my Radion pro lights. Hat should not take long to complete.

To be continued

These things take time. I'm moving in a month and dont have any grand illusions of doing anything specials with my tank for a while. My goal is to just move what i have without everything dying on me. after the dust settles, I may become ambitious....

Finally set-up but still have a few final touch-ups

Finally set-up but still have a few final touch-ups

The good news is the tank is up!!! The doors are not on the stand currently because I have to put one more coat of polyurethane on. The first set of photos were taken in October of 2012. It took a few weeks to find a trim and decorative corner piece that my wife and I liked. My uncle used some sort of tool to cut those pieces and he did an amazing job!

All the wood is birch wood and we chose that wood because of the look and cost. We found it to be a great middle grade for price and one of the prettier woods. Once everything was cut and put together, we did a bunch of sanding followed by more sanding.

Once the wood was smoothed out, the trim in place and the decorative corners in place, we began to stain. I think the stain looks good since this was my first time ever staining. Depending on the cost, if I would have to do it again I probably would have elected to go to a shop out in Mesa to have had it stained. But like I said it looks good for a rookie staining it and I am happy with the way it turned out.

The frist few coats the wood sucked up most of the stain, to be expected. When they say the first few coats are the most important, they are right!!! If you go too heavy or have a glob in once place, it is VERY difficult to even it out later on.

Once the staining was completed, we put two coats of polyurethane on the stand. I wanted to do this to protect the stand for water spills, since it is bound to happen. I used the 1500 overflow box from GH and it went on smoothly. No crakes or anything. Great product too!

The plumbing is simple and not much needs to be said about that.... The sump that you see in the last of the photos is only a temp. I will be using a 90 gallon, 4 footer. In a day or so I will have the baffles ready for install yay!!!

Other than that the only thing that really changed for the equipment was the exchange of Radion gen1 lights for the Pro, added a neptune apex light and a MP60 to go along with the MP40. I am looking to add a chiller for the mixing tank in the garage but other than that the tank is finished Enjoy!!!

The top right you can see where the quarantine tank will be. This is where the plumbing is hidden as well.

I will post more photos when the tank clears up and the doors/handing shadow-box are installed. Shouldnt be too long...but I have said that before lol

You can also see on the bottom of the cabinet, that is vinyl flooring. That was installed on the bottom of the stand as well.

For the lights I will be building a shadow-box like over the tank that will hang over the tank (not the cabinet portion.) I will be able to raise and lower them via pulley system for when I have to work inside the tank. Should be very cool!!! And it should not take long to build. I will post photos when it is built

Any plans to motorize the pulley system? If for no other reason than it would be extra cool.

She'll roll her eyes until it works then she'll look at you admiringly and realize what an awesome husband you are...seriously...;)

These are off my iPhone so the quality is not the best. Also the diatoms are not nearly as bad as the photos suggests. Enjoy!
