Best coral to start with?

I am very interested in keeping corals zoa and soft mostly right know. Was wondering what you guys and girls would suggest 55g tank 30g sump/ refugium

Personally I would start with some Zoas as they come in a variety of colors, easy to keep, and has some very rare collectors pieces you can keep that will guarantee to be eye-catching.

Frogspawns, hammers, and torches are generally pretty easy too.

Generally any soft/LPS corals are pretty straightforward as long as you keep up a good maintenance schedule, I would avoid things like mushrooms or xenias as they will take over your tank and soon you will have no space for anything else other than those.

OK I get what your saying and I agree it's not a huge tank and don't want something to take up half of it I appreciate the info

I would recommend a Duncan and these are easily my favorite coral.

If you give me your address I'll send you a nice frag of Kenya Tree, you pay the shipping. Mine is HUGE and grows like a weed.

+1 on the Duncan they look really cool, especially when it grows into a nice size colony and just swings in the waves.

Yah I like corals with movement like all Euphyllia's and Duncans they all will eat mysis if you feed them. I'm excited I'm getting a new gold torch tomorrow that will match my gold hammer and my first Elegance coral and a few others like some awesome acan's. Christmas is coming early at my house :D

Ha early Christmas is great lucky me all three of my kids love it so the lady can't say crap about the money I'm dumping into it

Leathers and Zoanthids are a good start.

For leathers I like toadstools and finger leather (Sarcophyton and Sinularia) They can both be found in colors from the purpleish/redish/brownish (hmm, looks better than it sounds) to teal or neon green.

Your best bet is to find a local reefer with an established soft coral tank, try a local club or hunt on craigslist.

Thanks didn't think about that

Like said above I'd avoid mushrooms, xenia and kenya trees unless you want a lot of them. The more upscale I take my corals the more I have to fight a mushroom infestation.

Leathers, frogspawn, zoanthids, or maybe even a monti cap are forgiving and won't take over.

Zoa's also will take over a tank. There is a guy here that has them covering all of his rocks it might be in the Reef discussion forum. Mushrooms are ok just depends on what you get.

If your going to go with mushrooms, I vote for ricordia. They grow a bit slower, have way better color then normal mushroom, and won't over run your tank. This is why I went with ricordia and not regular mushrooms.

My very first corals were a green hammer, orange ricordea, and duncan. IMO they are very easy to take care of & also look great.

For mushrooms I agree with Ricordea and also recommend Rhodactis. Both can be fed similar to anemones with brine shrimp or mysis. The Rhodactis can get rather large so limit feedings so they don't get as big as they can. Just Google both and you can see many choices on both.
