Best critter

What's the best critter for algea (the green kind that's just flat on there you have to have an algea scraper for) and ditirius on glass?

hmm, thats weird. That is all I use on mine. Have you had that trouble since you upgraded your lighting? I used to use my magnet twice a day, now since I got the tunze, I use it every other day. I do, however, have to use the scraper to get the purple coraline algea off the glass, but I only do that about once a month.

That much algae means the nutrient export is not equivalent to the nutrient import, in other words something is up with the filtration in the tank. Check the skimmer and other mechanical filtration.

I use the magnet every other day only because if I look at the glass from the side view, I can see some green starting, but you can not see it straight on. I could use it probably once a week because it is not notiable. I did, however, have to use it everyday during the summer when I was having the heat problem in my tank, and this was also before the wonderful tunze. I would use the magnet twice a day back then just because I could, and I am a real stickler when it comes to the tank being spotless :)
Ron, do you think needing to use the magnet everyother day it showing a problem in my tank too? I don't have a clue how often others need to do this.

I only run the magnet over mine about every 4 days but there is some stubborn green algea that won't come off with just the magnet. It takes the scraper to get it off.

For filteration I use a wet/dry sump, but I do not think I clean and change the media enough. As for the skimmer, I use a good one, I get quite a lot of skim, but only need to empty the container once a week, but I run it pretty dry. I have had a hard time adjusting the skimmer to produce a wetter skim, it is actually so dry that I have to scrub the cup when I emply it because it will not simply wash out under the fawcet. I probably need to pay more attention to my filteration. I will check up on that today and see what better ways I can do this, besides not being too lazy to wash my media more often :)

We all get algae on our glass it's just a matter of how much algae. If there is to much then it's nutrient problems. If it's a slight dusting, that's not a real problem IMO.

Ok, good cause you can't even tell it is on there unless you stand at the side and look through the end, even then it just looks like a dulling of the glass. When I clean it off you can't tell a differnce from the front at all. I would say that if I wasn't so weird about it that I could wait about 3 or 4 days until you could start to tell. That is now though, durring the summer when I was having the heat problem, If I skipped a day of using the magnet, you could tell, of course my temp got up 85 several times and stayed around 83, it is now 78

If you are getting the green razor type algae i would run your ccleaning magnet more frequently. Of course balancing nutrient import/export will help.

Sorry, not the tiger(need to do more research on it) but the carribean and the money cowries are. the carribean is "generally" reef safe and the money cowrey IS reef safe. more to come on the tiger.

just a quick note. after a long drawn out research session, the tiger cowrie IS reef safe also. although the mantle is rather tender and should not be kept with agressive tank mates. and last but not least the tiger cowrie is mostly nocturnal.

WOW you found time to do all that research man that was some good work. There might be a place for you in upper management around here LOL.
