Best dwarf angel for smaller tanks?

What are the tank size requirements and reef compatibility for some of the smaller dwarf angels? What sort of corals do they generally pick at?

I dont know much about the multicolor, flameback (never heard of that one...do you mean "flame angel" or is there also a "flameback?") or the fisheri (again...never heard of it) but the cherub is pretty much the smallest dwarf angel you're gonna find. I wouldnt put that in anything less than like 20-24. I've got a coral beauty in my 40 and its pretty good, and i also had it in my 29 but it looked a bit too big/active for that tank...flame angels are supposedly quite similar but i cant tell you from experience w/them

Though I do not have neither I have seen potter's angels and lemonpeels in nanos from 24-40 gallons. As to coral nipping I think its sorta random. Some do some don't. In some cases it could be feeding or they simply just do it. Careful watching will tell with time.

I think the Cherub would be the ideal candidate for a nano. Depends on the fish, but some might like to snack on zoa's and other softies. I would think that a minimum 25-30 gallons with a good amount of rock would be the smallest tank I'd consider putting one of those in .

I had a flame (Flameback is another type), totally reef safe but that varies from fish to fish.

I just got a cherub tonight, so far so good and probably my pick out of the four you listed

Yeah...been leaning towards the cherub. Had one a long time ago in a FOWLR. Active little fish that always made itself known during feeding.

What do you feed your dwarf angels?

i'd also like to know what corals? Its hit or miss. If it eats corals (i hears sps and zoas?), then it eats corals...some do some dont. If you keep it well fed, it might decrease the chance of eating corals. But to say that they eat corals for sure is a bit too far imo. I've had my coral beauty for around 5 months now. I've only had it in my 40 for about 3 weeks now, but i had it in my 29 before that...both tanks are softy dominated tanks, bunch of zoas included) and none of those are getting eaten. I've also got a few lps and sps corals, and none of them have been eaten by the coral beauty (tho my bicolor blenny did go for my digitata one time and pretty much wiped it out)

I'd also agree that keeping them well fed is important. What makes that difficult is that some angels never take to frozen foods and will just graze off your live rock. Hit or miss at best. Good luck with the cherub!

I've kept several Cherubs in 20gl and less reef tanks. Not at the same time. never had any problems with them bothering corals, but maybe because I kept them well fed on a variety.
This one had a habit of stashing pellets in a crevice and eating them later.

In an effort to be awesome like colin Im leaning along the lines of going down the cherub path. I thought about flame angel but I dont think he would like the confines of a 24g too much. Im not speaking from experience here but Ive been wondering the same thing for a while now and cherub seems the way to go.

I'm glad to hear people have had a cherub with no problems with corals..........i'm thinking of getting one myself........but i've read they can be aggressive.....any experiences with that?

For what it's worth, I've had a flame angel in my 24G aquapod for 6 months and it hasn't bothered any coral...yet. It doesn't appear to be overly active so I'm not worried about keeping it in this size tank.

I started feeding it frozen angel food but found that it liked spectrum pellets soaked in Kent Marine Zoe just as well. I've stopped feeding the frozen cubes but do feed frozen mysis and cyclopeez along with the pellets. So far so good.

Good luck with your choice. I debated over adding my angel for a long time but I'm really glad I did.

I have a Fishers angle in mine and absolutely love him. He doesnt bother any corals and is real active. Eats anything i put in the tank. I will tell you my past experiences for info. In the past, I have had a couple of cherubs----very dominant and aggressive!!! Everyone told me that if you add an angel fish, it must be the last fish added to the tank. I would totally agree with that. Once he gets settled in, he runs the show. He can be cool with the other fish that were previously there, but if you add someone new later, he's on him fast!!! So i had to trade my angels in. I had to do that more than once. Now i have a cool crew and everybody gets along, and no harm to corals or anything. I guess i got lucky.

I had a CB in my 29 for a little while. i ended up taking him out. i wouldn't suggest an angel at all. but if you absolutly had to have one. i would get a cherum my friend has one in his and i think it is doing good.
