how is the best way to feed your clams and what should you feed them... im currently dosing the tank every other day with zooplex

Funny isn't it how you can post a thread and no one replys :(
I'm not going to be of any help to you though because I have the same questions as you.

In my first experience with clams it died and so now I'm hesitant to try another until I can get some more info on feeding.

how big is your clam? If it is a little guy less than 3" you can do the following:

An easy way to make the plankton available to them is to place the clam on a flat shell so it can attach which allows an easier time moving the clam. Fill a shallow dish with tank water and add enough plankton to give the water a slight green tint then place the clam that is attached to the shell into the dish for 20-30 minutes so it can feed. If you are just dumping the plankton into the tank it may not get enough, so this is much easier. I don't have any small clams because this is kind of a pain, but that is a good way to do it. There are also many different plankton products on the market do a search to see which one will work best. I think a lot of people use DT's...or you can grow your own!!

I would have answered you if I was online the more recently but was busy. Personally I dose live phytoplankton in the current, I don't really use a mesuring device but just go with the flow. I dose it maybe 1/2 hour before the light goes out. The skimmer and filters are off for the night and I plug them back in the morning when lights comes back up again. This has been working well for me and ever since I began dosing live plankton my clams has gained about 1/2" of shell. Highly recommended.

i have heard that when they are this small they are more photosynthetic than meat eaters... im sure they use some of the phyto as well and I dont have much light so i guess the dish thing should prob be the best for me. how often should i do it? every other day when i dose the tank?

Finally :) :) :)

What is a target feeder and how does it work?

I recently purchased a piece of equipment that is a long tube that liquid food can be drawn up into. It is long enough to reach hard-to-get-to-places in the tank for feeding corals and/or fish that are not coming to feed in the open. Would this be something like a target feeder?

I thought the clams liked phytoplankton but wasn't sure. So thanks for confirming that. And many reefers have mentioned DTs in various threads as the thing to use. So it sounds like a daily feeding is in order. My understanding was that DTs is a 'live' phytophlankton but I don't understand how that can be when something is bottled?

Inquiring minds want to know!
