what are the best options for fish that actually have a job i.e. eating coral pests, fish pests, sand pests... i know the six line is good but i hear horror stories about them being jerks.

Any wrasse from the Halichoeres genus. I love my melanurus wrasse, he cleared up my monti-eating nudi problem in two days.

what about cleaner wrasse's their not pest,Im sure the eat what most wrasse's eat, not sure. But I have twoin two seperate tanks and the dont bother nothing! Just clean when it's needed and eat alot! But I know everybodie's not a fan of keeping cleaner wrasse's. Just My O.P

+1 for a melanurus wrasse will take out many tank pests and is a beautiful fish to have in your tank. Mine is a favorite.

Cleaner wrasses have horrible survival rates in captivity, and do not consume most tank pests. Some people can make it work, but it certainly not advised for people to try. Especially as a cure to a tank issue.

Pick any of the fish mentioned only if you like the fish anyway.

Even if others say it eats pests, any individual fish may not eat them in your tank.

My Yellow Coris Wrass (Halichoeres chrysus) doesn't touch my Monti eating Nudibranchs.
My Seagrass Filefish (Acreichthys tomentosus) never ate a mojano or aptasia.
My peppermint shrimp never molest aptasia.
Nothing ever eats the algae I want to get rid of.

Your milage may vary, but get a fish that you won't regret having even if it never eats a pest.
