I HAVE BEEN FEEDING FROZEN MYSIS IS THERE A BETTER FOOD ? I HAVE BEEN TOLD THERE IS A SHRIMP CALLED (SP) CYCLOSPORA ? IF ITS AS GOOD OR BETTER THAN MYSIS CAN THIS BE PROPOGATED EASILY ??/

I don't know about other stuff, but I have found that not all frozen mysis is the same. I was using Hikari, but it was too big and they did not like the bodies. I accidently moved to Sally's and they eat it like crazy. Just a thought.

PE mysis is the best IMO. Better nutritional profile the the others.

I fed live fresh water ghost shrimp for 5 years and was happy with them, just to expensive.

I feed my horsies a combo of things, PE Mysis, Hikari, I sometimes throw in some cyclopeeze too, it's small though, so if I do, it wouldn't be much....(pollution!) Used to feed live mysis, and that got expensive, but had a pretty good success with breeding so they get treats every now & then.....my guys LOVE glass shrimp too.

Every sunday we do brine, I have heard that the horses get fatty liver disease if you don't give them a "break" from the high fat content of the mysis.

Trial & error really, have some guys who won't touch certain things & some who devour! I always like to give them a "hunt" so I do switch it up with live from time to time! (We also have brine growouts, we feed them a combo of spirulina & flake food & offer that as treats as well) =)

Good luck!!!

i used frozen mysis and live ghost shrimp. The ghost shrimp were more of a treat, like going out for a steak dinner :) due to the cost, but they loved them!

Most animals will do better with a varied diet.

I personally prefer PE mysis but my horses do get occasional treats of ghost shrimp or brine.

However I do worry about possibly infecting them w/ parasites from live foods such as ghost shrimp

Feeding fresh water ghosts will help to minimize the risk of introducing parasites.

Brine is very hard for seahorses to digest. Take a close look at seahorse poop after feeding brine some time. There are whole undigested pieces.

This is not true. PE mysis is a good brand, however it is a freshwater mysis. Gamma mysis is a much better food for saltwater animals. I believe the misconception was started that PE is better because they include dry weight percentages. When you take into acount the moisture every brand is close in protein content (within a percent or two).

The diff your talking about is amino acid profile.

Fresh verses marine creatures have a different profile, it is better to feed marine fish marine sourced foods, but that is not always possible.

Protein varies very little, and that is not an issue, free fatty acids is of great concern, simply because the sourced foods usually have to higher levels, this must be accepted and taken into account when feeding, supplementary feeds of gut loaded brine shrimp a few times a week is very beneficial.

Enrichments should consist of different foods for the adults, Spiralina, (lots of vit C a very good antioxidant, also most all known trace elements, as well as many other vitamins and minerals) Chlorella (much like) and if you can get any, astaxanthin, ( a very oil based antioxidant) if this is not available, naturose, or even failing than, some regular feeds of krill. spiralina

Also important is freshness, never keep mysids for more than about two months, 3 is maximum IF you know its history, ie, freezing times from death and to terminal temp, holding temps-any fluctuations, IMO play it safe, 2 months for frozen product maximum holding time. Also never thaw and hold over or refreeze.
