Best macro lens focal length for tanks?

hobbzz

How do I change this?
I'm looking at canons 100mm and 180mm macro lenses and wondering which focal length would be more suited to standard sized tanks that are 24" wide front to back? Will 100mm be enough to reach the back of the tank? Thanks in advance.

Yes, 100mm would be great. If you can wing the 180mm, why not? :)

However, with the longer reach, it means you may have to stand further back for those things closer to the front of the tank.

Yes, the primary difference is working distance. Minimum focus distance with the 100 is 6". For the 180, it's basically 19".

Thanks guys. The reason I ask is that I don't have a camera yet. My D200 was stolen a couple years ago and I haven't been able to replace it yet, so I can't go to the tank and test out the different focal lengths on a different lens to see where it gets me. I'll be picking up a 70D soon but I'm trying to figure out my lenses now.

you honestly can't go wrong with a 100mm. They hold their resale value really well as well. A 180 is more specialized macro and doesn't hold its value as well. At least IME, but YMMV
