Im thinking about setting up a 75g reef and was wondering what would be the best equipment. Your favorite tank skimmer pumps lighting. Stuff that is quality but not necessarily too expensive. or may be your favorite thread for DIY set ups thanks

No two tanks are the same. You need to figure budget and monthly electric bill and water changes with RO/DI water and buying salt and type of stock wanted.
If your new to the hobby then stick with a basic setup and workup from there.
You need minimum amount of LR.
Minimum amount of LS.
Minimum amount of water flow.
All water test kits.
Research this then whene ready set it up and then you have 4 to 8 weeks to preplan the rest.

If you get the basics down then everything will fall in place.Slow and steady with much research will create the best seat in the house.

A well planned system is the best set up
figure out your budget
figure out what you plan to keep -fish-coral types
research everything before you buy anything, no need to spend money twice or worse.
buy the best you can afford
remember you can add more live rock later
you can"t add on to your skimmer
anything you can diy do it if you are confident it's done right
if you have a club near you - join
and ask many, many questions.

I have a 75 gal mixed reef
80 lbs of rock - mostly live rock but some was base rock
50 lbs of live sand
aquatinics 5 bulb T-5 (270 wts)
cpr overflow box going to a 20 gal refugium- mag 9.5 return
a koralia wavemaker 2 and 2x #3 pumps
I stock - two clowns, yellow tang, flame angel, decorator goby
various snails, 5x sexy shrimp
hairy mushrooms, rics- both Florida and yuma, a duncan, trumpet, zoo's and paly's monti caps and digi, xenia, one acro

Im setting up a 75 right now, Just got my skimmer, its a DAS EX-1 and seems to be pretty well made, I will be using a Koralia #4 and a Vortech powerhead, an oceanrunner 2500 for the return with a T to feed the skimmer, about to order a 6 bulb ICE cap T5 kit

I'm in the process of setting up a 75 gal lps reef my self have been doing intensive research for 3-4 months and here is what I'm going with.

2x koralia # 3's
life reef overflow
46 gal sump/fuge
magdrive 7 return
aquac ev120 skimmer
icecap t5vho slr 4 bulb retro kit with computer fans in hood

hope that helps some

My first tank was a 55. Four months later I had a 120 sitting where the 55 used to be. Here it is almost a year later and the contents of the 120 is getting moved into a 450.

But a LOT of the ground work to be able to support the 450 was done with the 120. Huge sump. Huge fuge. Big skimmer. Automatic water changes. etc.

I was told when I bought the 55 that we don't upgrade tanks, we add more.

I am also in process of setting up a 75 Gallon tank after doing research for around a month here is what i am planning.

20L sump
75 lbs of live sand
around 75 lbs of live rock
Skimmer - AquaC EV-120 skimmer.
2x koralia 3's
mag 5 for skimmer
mag 7 or probably mag 9 for return
2 cpr overflows on sides of tank, on going to skimmer nad other going to refigium with ball valve.
lightning -- planning to aquactinics T5HO 54W * 5 or Tek5 54W * 5.

hope this helps.
