Best Phosphate Remover

I have a small resurgence of cyano in my tank. No where near as bad as it used to be. I have finally got my nitrates down to 5 using water changes and less food. However, I would like to try something to remove phosphates also. Any suggestions on what can be used?

I do not have a sump or anything. I do have a little HOB Aquaclear for some extra LR rubble. Can I put some in a container/mesh bag/etc, and place it in there? I do have a canister filter. How about in there?

Any Ferric Oxide product (PhosBan, RowaPhos, etc.), but they need to be run in a fluidized bed reactor to be effective.

They dont "HAVE" to be fluidized from what i understand to be effective. A media bag like with carbon will work also. They recommend using a reactor because the fluid motion helps stop the GFO from becoming a big solid brick as it breaks down.

I believe maximum contact time is the key to being successful with it, so try not to have to fast/strong of current run threw it.

use rowaphos. it comes with a specialized bag to hold the media. it can be dropped in a sump or hob filter. cyano will decrease within weeks.

Yea, as far as the fluidization part, I think the feeling is that the longer we allow the water to stay in contact with the media, the better off you'd be. I run a reactor with GFO and try to keep it lightly tumbling, maybe only running 80 GPH or so thru it. But it can be put in a sock and place somewhere. It just may not be optimal, that's all.

I too only have a HOB Aquaclear (on a 29). A reactor - even makeshift - would be ideal, but as it is running filter bags of carbon and GFO is doing the job ok.

Awesome...thanks everyone. I eventually would like to upgrade to a bigger tank with a sump. But until that happens, it is good to know I can still make do with what I have. I will try some Phosban and see how the tank looks in a couple weeks. Do these products ever expire if they are not used?

if you are looking for GFO cheep check out bulk reef suply, i was able to get 2 pounds for like 30.00. its a great price condifering its basicly the same stuff as rowaphos and phosban

Has anyone used Phos-Zorb? I saw it at a local place for 6.99 for a bag that can be used for a 55 gallon tank.

Either of those places would work. You could also hang it so it's under the output of the HOB aquaclear. I really think it would work better in it tho:thumbsup:
