Best pump for 1/4 HP chiller

What is the best pump for a JBJ Arctica 1/4 HP chiller?

The unit requires a Min/Max flow range of 480-1920 GPH.

There are numerous pumps that fall in that range.

I have a small sump, so I'm looking for something < 800 GPH.

What do you recommend? I really like Eheim's pumps, I have a few of them, so I was thinking maybe a 1260.

Any ideas?

Can you just run your return through the chiller so you don't need another pump?

Good question. I never thought of that. I just assumed you used a seperate pump.

Anyone with a chiller please speak up. I am totally ignorant when it comes to how to implement a chiller.

You should check with the manufacturer of the chiller. IME, they can vary in the flow requirements.

Really depends on how much "extra flow" you might have left in your return pump. The chiller will be adding considerable head to any pump. If you go with a pump just for the chiller you can use that for an extra return to the tank if your overflow will handle the adding volume. Otherwise you'll just need to feed it from the sump and return it to the sump which might cause more on-off cycles than normal.

Tank -->chiller -->pump --> uv --> back to tank

How does it get from the tank to the chiller without a pump?

I don't think the chiller I am getting can be gravity fed.

The flow requirements and chiller are stated in the initial post. Per the user manual for my chiller it can be plumbed inline using just the return pump.

That may be the direction I go. I'll do some more research, thanks.

I hooked my new chiller like this:

Tank>>>Rio 2500>>Chiller>back to the tank

Before w/o my chiller, I was using Rio 1700..

I've had the same chiller for about 2 years now, and I had been using a mag7 but noticed that it would take forever to cool my tank down.
I decided to go with a mag12 a couple of weeks ago, and it seems to have helped.

Gravity fed...You might need and extra drain, overflow with that...I did that with my skimmer.

I think just play it safe and go with the eheim like you stated, less work easier to maintain.

How do you know if the overflow flowrate is enough or not enough for the chiller? I also have a Arctica 1/4 and feed it with a Mag5, but would consider the overflow method. As of now, its plumbed as is: sump - chiller - sump - back to main display

Ocean Runner pumps...look into those pretty low wattage, silent pumps. I love mine.

The instructions for the 1/4 HP JBJ Arctica show 3 installations all of which have the chiller inbetween the return pump and the tank.

So it seems the only correct way to install these things is directly in your return path. So I won't need another pump. THis is good news and makes the install a bit easier to.

I have an Eheim 1262 (900 GPH) pump that I will use. THIs will be perfect since I only want around 600 GPH actual flow. THe 900 minus the headpressure caused by the chiller should get me there.
