Best salt for a SPS domintate tank

I would go with the reef salt. I think most people that go for the Seachem are using that. It was 2 am when I did the count and post so I was a bit out of it.

Thanks allsps40. I'm just hoping that it is a very consistent salt and will most likely switch once I run out of my last 160 gallon bucket;) Nice thread!

After 3 years of using Reef Crystals i switched over to Seachem reef salt this week. Nothing is wrong with my tank its just that I am dosing Vodka right now and seachem reef salt has a lower alkalinity than reef crystals. So instead of having to lower my alk and really keep an eye on it i figured id go for a salt that is closer to the parameters that im looking for directly out of the box if you get what i mean. Im 1 week in so ill post my results in another 3 weeks to see if i notice any difference.

Did you switcho to the Seachem Reef Salt? What is the alk when mixed?

I have been using oceanic since I started my SPS tank in May and I like it a lot. I will be switching to TM Pro on my next bucket though since I'm starting Zeo.

I'm on my 5th bucket and my ALK is always 8.5 dkh. I like the salt but i'm going to change. the CAl is just to high for me 560/580

I'm not too worried about calcium. Right now I'm dosing 150 mL a day and do 5 Liters worth of water changes each and every day on my 90 gallon system. I'm thinking I would just not have to dose as much. I also use a LiterMeter III for automatic water changes so it would gradually change out the 5 liters each day. I'm thinking this would end up requiring less dosing from my doser in this manner...Time will tell. Next time I go to PA I'll be grabbing a bucket of the SeaChem;)

Mine mixes from around 8.5 to 9 alk for the most part. Make sure you mix it up good like any other salt. Yes i switched to the Seachem Reef Salt from reef crystals. The high calcium isnt a problem at all as the higher it is it dosnt really affect anything. Its the Alk that im really concerned with when carbon dosing. I get a stable alk on the lower end and the reef crystals was mixing up just to high that i was starting to get burnt tips. So far my corals seem to be responding well and some of the burnt tips are actually totally healed with full PE already. Im going to stick to this salt for a while i think.

ive been using Deltec H2O for over a year now and things cannot be more stable with 2 part. Used RC before that for years and always found myself supplementing stuff. At firt I found Deltec to be expensive , but after having to constantly supplememnt, my time and chemicals balances out the price difference. Besides that the increase in price of salts has evened out as far as im concerned.

OK have narrowed my new salt choice down to 2 brands. AquaVitro Salinity Reef or H2Ocean. Both have the target ca alk and mag I am looking for. It will come down to price and local supply.

Get a salt that is within your budget and the rest will come. IMO all salts are pretty much ok... its more a matter of keeping your params stable...

This hole what sale to use thing is such a mind ****. I keepin looking at the salt test results in the sticky thread. Seachem, Aquavitro, H2Ocean and even my RC all have the target levels I want to keep. The numbers on them all look good to my and what I want. RC is the cheapest and most available to me. I my just stick with RC, I just dont know. Maybe I will give one it one more try. If I see my sps continue to looks better after the bleaching I had, then I will just keep using RC. If not then I will change for sure. There are after all so many nice tanks using RC.
