best snail for glass cleaning

Dolphin Finatic
my sandbed is staying pretty clean because of the queen conchs, but their not very good on the glass. I have astreas and what they can clean on the glass they do a pretty good job, unfortunately I don't have nearly enough. Is their a better alternative to the astrea for glass cleaning, if so can you please recommend.

What is a good amount of snails for a 95 gallon ?

Thanks

Mag-Float

On a more serious note, I will look around for you. I've never had problems with my turbos, heck, when I first put them in my rocks were green and next morning they were all nice and white, now they're purple. I have a 55, and I only put in 3, but they were quite large, and had a voracious appetite.

even though the mag float part is funny I agree it will do much better than tring to have snails keep your glass clean.

I have a mag float, but the stuff accumilates too quickly on the glass. It's a pain so scrub at the sand level, the reason for snails.

Well, you could call the neighbor hood kids over and make them pay a dollar to go on the "mag float ride".

I'll stick w/ my turbos and my mag float, or people have had success w/ UV sterilizer.

My ceriths are on the glass quite often, and my turbos occasionally are.

I think Astraea's... or at least mine... are useless

Anyway, as stated above a magnet cleaner will work best. Even with the cerith snails I still need to wipe my glass down about every 3 days or so. The snails kind of take a windy path across the glass, definitely not a full scale sweep.

I actually need to boost my CUC crew, and plan on doing so this week hopefully.

then i suggest you attack the source, lower nitrates, lower phosphates.

I'm still dealing with a relatively new tank so I'm going to expect a little bit. As far as the nitrates and phosphates, I don't know how I can get those any better. I don't feed heavy by any means, have chaeto in the fuge, run a phosban reactor and use RODI.

I had a frag party today and a couple guys swear by uv sterilizer. I know some consider them snake oil, but some swear by them. How would these help with algae control ?

Astraeas do just about as good a job as any other snail. I prefer Trochus and Nerites myself. Trochus because they do just as good a job as Astraeas and if they fall on their backs, they can usually flip themselves back over. Nerites because most species stay nice and small and don't knock over my frags. Plus, some of them have really cool designs on their shells.

I prefer astraeas. Beside having way to many vowels in their name they do a good job on the glass especially where my magfloat is not easy to get into. I agree with kau_cinta_ku though. If you have algae build up that fast you have bigger problems than snail selection.

I like trochus and ceriths. If you have a sandbed, the ceriths will do double duty by burrowing around in there. Turbos can knock over frags (which is why I don't use them) , but they are great cleaners. Get some trochus snails for the glass IMO.
