Best time to buy?

New to saltwater and all of the equipment that goes with it. I plan on taking my time as I build my setup. Do retailers ever have decent sales (like black friday, etc.) or are prices always pretty much consistent? I'm talking more along the lines of equipment as opposed to live stock.

It'smuch like any other retailers. You will see sales during holidays and can find sponsor coupons in various forums. Another great resource would be used equipment from other hobbyists, there is always someone in your area getting out of the hobby.

Black Friday is always the best deals. I picked up my skimmer during a black Friday sale for a bout 150 dollars less than the rest of the year. Sign up your email for local and online newsletters. I get the occasional Easter, Labor Day, Memorial day 10 to 20% of sales sent to my email.

Always new and lighly used equipment for sale right here on reef central. A lot of hobbyist scale up the size or their tanks quicker than you might expect and with that offer their current equipment for sale right here. Lights, reactors, tanks, powerheads you name it. Safe yourself hundreds/thousands of dollars and start here: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=2

enjoy

Got to work my way up that post count. It's what I get for mainly being a reader. :hammer:

What are some of the better online retailers besides BRS? My local offerings are pretty sparse.

Where are you located? If pa has anything to do with Pennsylvania, we have a pretty good sized fish store here that always has 25% coupons to use every month.

I'm in Idaho. Where I'm at we have one dedicated saltwater shop and a few freshwater shops with a tank or two of marine fish. That is outside of the usual big box pet stores.

Ok, will I wish I had a better answer for you. Sorry.

Fortunately here in Pa we have a good sized fish store with lots of good stock, just unhealthy so qt is a must.

To be honest, ... aside from giving any business I can to my LFS (not chain) you would be hard pressed to find better product selection, pricing, and most importantly customer service and constant consumer education than BRS. They are just that good at what they do. There are a few "new" items occasionally on auction at Ebay so check that out. Otherwise let BRS be your go to retailer.

Their videos are top notch. I'm about halfway through their 52 weeks series.
