Best trigger for a reef??

Crosshatched. Very expensive.
Other possibilities, although not quite as safe would be the blue throat and pink tail triggers.

I am torn between the three reasonably priced species mentioned above:Blue Throat; Pink Tail: or Sargassum (a.k.a. Ringgens). Around here, you can get all as smaller individuals for less than $100 if you shop.

Unless you can spend real bucks that's your selection.

i would do crosshatch

if your going to want a nice trigger that would be the way to go a little expensive but good fish

I'll add my two cents.... crosshatch.

They are very mild, beautiful triggers.... unless you are a shrimp of course!

The bluethroat is more consistently safe than the pinktail.

Overall, the crosshatch is the safest, but it's one of the most expensive, and it's also one of the least hardy.

I personally prefer the bluethroat, because, like the crosshatch, you can get them in pairs, but they're much cheaper.

Even Xanthichthys sp. triggerfishes can be unpredictable. While all species of the genus typically feed on zooplankton, all will occasionally sample benthos. IMO/E, use caution with any species.

My Niger has been in my mixed reef with snails, crabs, clam, urchin, shrimp, and SFE and is a model citizen. Picks up things that enter his hiding place and moves them someplace else. Very entertaing to watch and with 3"+ banners on of the most beautiful fish I have seen. Others have had problems, but that goes for all fish.

Is that your BT in the avitar? Looks great. Do you have only the male? And have you seen any color loss if it is just the male? That fish is on my list but have heard some things about color loss if the male is alone. My opnion is that it was probably bad diet that caused it.

In my 240 reef I currently have a big pink tail, blue throat, and a niger. No aggression towards any inverts that i've personally seen, but I do have a few empty hermit shells...Pink tails can get a little territorial/aggressive with other triggers. I tried adding a good sized black durgen trigger and the pink tail killed it.

I've had no problems with my Niger either, then again he's just a little guy (see avatar).

I have a Niger in my reef,he's a model citizen. I got him about 4 1/2 months ago,he's grown from 2 1/2 " to 4 1/2"! He's such beutifull colours, and such a character. Last night he was getting cleaned by my cleaner wrasse, while getting cleaned he changed colours. he went from blue to pink. was so cool!

I love him. :smokin:
