Hey guys,

I ordered the aquacultured Candy Cane corals that you guys were selling. They have arrived and are doing great! They came mounted/growing on the aragonite plugs from you guys. The have big spikes on the end that I am looking to remove or possible remove the entire coral from the whole plug/disk. How is the best way to do this? What sort of device should I use and where should i cut the corals? Thanks.

fierceseaman,

That is a very good question. To ensure that we accurately advise you, we will contact our Aquaculture Coral and Marine Life Facility. When we receive this information for you, we will post the response. In the meantime, if you could P.M us or call 1-800-334-3699 ext. 225 with your order information.

fierceseaman,

Thank you for calling and giving us the opportunity to assist you. Per our phone conversation we have sent you the email with the web page address that will help instruct you on how to propagate the Candy Cane Coral. If you are interested in propagating other Corals, we also sell the Book of Coral Propagation by Anthony Calfo. This book is currently on sale for $32.99 and would make an excellent reference to have on hand if you are planning on propagating Corals.

Fierceseaman,

When our Aquacultured corals are shipped from out Aquaculture Coral & Marine Life Facility here in Rhinelander they are shipped on three different sizes of aragonite plugs. The Acroporas and LPS corals are attached to a plug 1” in diameter and 1 ¾” long. The Polyps and Montiporas are attached to a larger plug 1 ¼” in diameter and 1 ½” long. The soft corals are attached to a 1 ¾” square that is 1” high. We would generally not recommend removing the Aquacultured corals from the aragonite plugs when you receive them as these plugs provide a good solid base for the coral to grow. Instead you can either place the pin of the plug into a hole in between your live rock, or drill a hole in your live rock to place the pin into. You may also cut off the long pin on the bottom of the plug with a pair of sturdy sharp scissors and use super glue or epoxy to adhere the plug to your live rock. It is all right for the coral to be out of the water for 15-30 seconds while you do this. The larger square aragonite plugs that the soft corals are attached to may also be cut to shape as needed and either placed or glued into position. We hope that you find this additional information helpful.
