Don't change parameters too fast. High alk may not be good, but lowering it very quickly to 8 could end up killing all your sps. Also, while many people suggest having near perfect natural sea water levels, IME (20 years), it's not necessary to grow colorful and healthy SPS. There are many successful non ULNS tanks, that run alk in 9-11 range and have lower levels of Nitrate and Phosphate. There are many ways to skin the cat, don't think you have to do anything one way.
You don't mention what salt you use? I use Instant Ocean, which, along with many many other salt mixes, has a higher alk freshly mixed. If you are going for a lower alk in the DT (7-8), then you should make sure you're using a salt that mixes up that way or you'll be fighting a losing battle.
