Beware of aquamaxx skimmer pumps

To all my reef keeping community. Please be aware that Aquamaxx Skimmers use altered Sicce Italy pumps on some/all of their skimmers. They alter them with aftermarket products (confirmed by Viktor, aquamaxx tech support) which can result in impeller failure. I've had to replace the Aquamaxx impeller 3x. One time I got for free from Marine depot and the other 2 times I paid $80+ per impeller. I spoke in great length with Sicce, the manufacturer and they were adamant that they do not promote the use of aftermarket impellers as they cause damage to the housing, which is what happened to me. They also went ahead and informed me that they see the same type of damage my pump sustained due to this aftermarket practice. Essentially the original impeller damaged my pump and the subsequent impellers failed due to the original damage. What's more interesting is that the SICCE needle wheel impellers are significantly less expensive then what Aquamaxx charges for the cheaply made aftermarket knock offs from Taiwan. It's concerning to think Aquamaxx not only installs an inferior product to make higher profit margins. Because they know sooner or later someone will brake the ceramic shaft while doing cleaning and maintenance and it gives them an opportunity to gouge the user. Reminds me of printer ink; the home printer is a good deal but the cost you'll spend running it is ridiculous.

I have been in the hobby for over 10 years. I have a 450 gallon display reef system with almost 1000 gallons of total water volume. The skimmer itself seems to get the job done but beware of the pump and the associated cost for a cheaply made supplied needle wheel impeller. It could eventually damage your pump in addition to the garbage impeller leaving you to have to buy another one. BTW best Aquamaxx was willing to do is offer me 10% off a new one. What a joke!

Hope this review helps. :headwalls:

Thanks for the word, i follow your logic. I thought their cone bubble plate design was cool but I went with a reef octopus for their pumps after all consideration.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience. I used AquaMaxx HOB skimmers a long time ago and was happy with it.

From what I understand, most skimmer brands modify these pumps and manufacture their own impellers for their specific needs. Could that be the "aftermarket" you were referring to?

Yes, we do use, and advertise, that custom impellers are used for our skimmers and that pumps are modified. We even go to the extent of renaming it a "˜Shark' pump to let customers know that it is not just a standard Sicce pump/impeller. It helps make the skimmer perform as well as it does and allows us to maximize the performance of the pump to match our skimmers.

Similar to performance parts for cars (exhausts, superchargers, suspension, wheels), if you want performance that is better than the original, modifications are often required. Cost of custom-made parts are often more expensive to manufacture than mass-produced parts. The use of a custom-made impeller is definitely not a cost-saving measure as the latter is a much cheaper and easier route.

We do fully stand behind our products with a full one-year warranty on both the pump and the impeller. We are happy to answer any questions or concerns anyone may have regarding our products. Please feel free to email us at info@aquamaxxaquariums.com

I love my AquaMaxx CO2, and my HOB-1 before it. That thing really churns out some sludge, and I never have to touch it besides occasional cleanings.

I agree, the Skimmer itself is a good design. the aftermarket impellers they use are garbage made out of Taiwan and they source these impellers, private label and then up charge the hell out of them $80 (are you kidding me). The Sicce impellers are 1/4 of the cost. I spoke to Sicce in length and they said they see this kind of issue all the time with aftermarket impellers. Unfortunately now I can't just replace the impeller with a Sicce brand because the original impeller cracked at it's seem and damaged my pump. I'm now purchasing a new PUMP and Impeller combo from Sicce which is almost cheaper than the garbage impeller Aquamaxx is trying to gouge it's users with.

If you need to replace the pump or impeller for your Aquamaxx Cone is please save your safe the headache and money and get it from the original manufacturer. SICCE SK 400 with Needle Wheel

Also. SICCE has great customer service. They spent a lot of time with me to ensure and determine that the damage that my pump and impeller encountered was due to the cheap, overpriced, aftermarket impeller Aquamaxx peddles to it's customers.

Took some pictures. but when I hit the picture attachment icon it asks for a URL. How do I upload them from my hard drive?

Thanks.

The impeller has oxidized quite a bit since I took it out. When I took it out, it was just a crack, not all rusted the way it looks now. You can see the parallel crack in the housing. SICCE reviewed these photos and assured me that it wasn't due to anything other than the aftermarket impeller. I properly maintain and clean my pumps regularly to mitigate any deposit build up.

EDIT - Marinedepot contacted me with an RMA number for the impeller shortly after I posted this. Thank you

I'm with you. Aquamaxx skimmers worked OK in my two tanks, but IME pumps/impellers were way too fragile. Currently using very efficient SRO 3000 INT on 180 and amazing Vertex Omega 130 on 75.

Beware of aquamaxx skimmer pumps

Had exactly the same issue with my skimmer. Came out a few days ago to find no flow and when I went to take it apart, the impeller was stuck in the housing.

Unfortunately the housing was cracked too. Pretty bummed.
