Beware of aquamaxx skimmer pumps

Thanks for sharing. Now I'm more inclined to clean and inspect my impellers. Usually, I don't bother to until I see weak performance, but I don't want to wait for a crack to catch something like this.

Not good but unfortunately this can happen to any pump or magnet. I've seen it happen to many different brands and has happened to me with a mag 18 pump and reef octopus hy3000 before.

And of course sicce will blame it on a 3rd party part. They will not support anything like that but that doesn't mean it was specifically the cause and will happen to all shark pumps.

JNS has been modifying these pumps for many years as have many other skimmer maker. Sicce pumps are very popular and for good reason.

I am now two impellers down after 2 years. ****ed as I just replaced this 6 months ago. Now I have no skimmer and have to drop another $80

Just wanted to put my experience in here. I too have an aquamaxx skimmer and in the past 3 years have replaced the impeller 3 times after noticing that my livestock was not happy and eventually locating the failed magnet housing. I do hope they choose to use better materials in the future but my personal gripe is that it took over 6 total impellers from online vendors to finally receive one that didn't arrive with a cracked housing.

As mentioned by jason2459, we do continually work to improve our products. We are also one of the few skimmer manufacturers that warrants our impellers for a full 12 months.

All the black impellers were replaced with light-grey colored impellers about 18 months ago. The new light-grey impellers have improved durability and better heat resistance. Thus far, the improvements have been very positive. We do recommend cleaning out the pumps every 3 months to remove algae and calcium build up as well as making sure no debris or small snails can get into your pump. Algea/calcium build up as well as trapped debris can cause the impellers to not be able to spin freely and cause the pump/impeller to heat up. Left long enough, the excess heat can damage the impellers and/or the pumps.

Our impellers/pumps/skimmers, when purchased from authorized retailers, do come with a full 12-month warranty. So, if you purchased the item in the past 12 months, please contact us at info@aquamaxxaquariums.com and we will be happy to assist you with the warranty service.

Also have a massively wobbly impeller that needs replacement as the pump is super loud and binds badly not letting the pump run. Thanks for posting this as ill now be ordering an impeller straight from sicce and burning this piece of trash. ill let you know how it goes when i get it.

Can anyone confirm if they've fixed this issue? I understand that there is a warranty, but if it's a design flaw that is set to re-occur, does this mean a constant need to replace the impellar?

Also, do these skimmer produce a lot of micro bubbles? It seems like almost all the HOB Skimmers release microbubbles back into the tank, to some degree.

Thanks

Had a HOB-1 that I used from 2012-2018. Never had a problem with the impeller. Great skimmer.

I put it in the rear compartment of a JBJ 28 gallon all-in-one tank, and later in a 24" custom cube with rear filter area, so I can't comment on whether it would put bubbles back into the tank.

Public service message I guess. Pulled the impeller today on my Aquamaxx ConeS CO-3 today for cleaning. Split with a little rust showing. Went and got my back up ConeS CO-2 and checked the magnet before installing, it's got a crack down the length. So I looked up the price of the CO-3 impeller, and it's $75. Impeller lasted just under 12 months (not under warranty, skimmer set boxed for a while). No thanks. Will be shopping for a different brand tonight.

Interesting.................I have an Amaxx ConeS 1 and the impeller is 7+ years old and clean with little to no wear.

My Amaxx 3 the pump died after 6 years but I kept the Impeller and other parts as they were still good. The replacement pump was $179

These pumps and impellers do need to be cleaned often as bacterial slim will cause the magnet to slip losing power. It's also possible to get build up that will cause friction which wears out impellers.

Ive had Deltec skimmers with eheim pumps get wear and rust, so I'm not sure it's an issue with just Amaxx. Those casings are the weak point.

Look for pumps that have solid strong magnets on the impellers that are impervious to rust. That may mean buying a skimmer that's at least double the price for the same size Amaxx
