I don't want to bash too much but I think they are wrong. Here is the e-mail thread so all should be explained here. Please let me know if you think this is right or wrong.

They are blaming the bank but only Marine Depot could place the amount as a transaction.

Hello Lance,
Thank you for your email. I spoke to you earlier today and tried my
best to get to the core of this situation. Your complaint is definitely
taken seriously here at Marine Depot. Your bank is holding the $361.41, not
us. You can call your bank and tell them to release the funds. We only
charged you $61.41. The situation with us "holding" the amount is only a
sales draft. We, then, release that and charge only the correct amount. I am
so sorry for the inconvenience. Please call your bank; they will also be
able to explain this situation to you, maybe in more detail. Have a
wonderful trip to New York.

If you have any other questions, please contact us. Thank you and have a
great day!

Subject: Problems with how your company handles gift certificates
(Thread:952837)

To whom it may concern:

I recently asked my family to purchase your gift certificates as a birthday
present so that I could buy whatever it is I wanted for my aquarium. When I
went online to order I was not confident that your check-out system could
handle multiple gift certificates correctly so I called the order in. The
amount was 361 dollars and some change. The total gift certificate amount
was 300 dollars. I cannot believe that the full amount is temporarily
charged to my account making the full amount not available to me for days. I
am now currently short 300 dollars in my bank account. I am lucky that there
was enough in my account to avoid over-drafts. This is very inconvenient for
the customer and I cannot understand why this would be when all the
purchased gift certificates have already cleared each of my family members
bank. It is as if we are being double charged even if it is on a temporary
basis. To add more grief to this fact, I am traveling to New York later
today and I am now short on money that I needed for this trip. I am very
unhappy about this fact and you can be assured I will post details on all
the forums I am member of including reefcentral.com. I am not even sure if I
will purchase from your company again. I believe this is a legitimate gripe
and I hope it is taken seriously.

Long standing customer,
Lance Lewis

If the gift certificates were already payed for there should be no reason they should charge you even temporarily. That sounds like BS, unless they have to validate the gift certificates and even in that case the certificates should be fully authorized at time of purchase eliminating the need for a charge. Sounds like bad buisness practice to me. I currently had a problem with them in a shipping address error which I am working out with them, but so far they are being extremly helpful!
