Beyond the reef.

The DQ King
Long time reefer.

Have bought coral from them in the past and never any fish. I wanted to get a mandarin, picked him up here. 3 days later ALL of my fish have ich. Regal angel, powder blue, purple tank, chevron tang, magnificent foxface, and my smaller fish.

My mistake for not QT it. Ive never had a issue in my 15years like this, but jush a heads up for all of you locals.

I havent contacted them and prob will not because the end result will be :you should have qt the fish".

Just my 2c

That sucks! Having to hospitalize all your fish now. Keep your tank fishless for 4 to 6 weeks. Medicate, daily water changes of 10 percent plus your home is gonna look wierd with all of those hospital tanks. Hopefully no fish will die. good luck and get to it.

For the prices you pay at beyond the reef id expect good quality. I was actually planning on heading their today to get some things but since I don't have a qt may adjust that plan and head somewhere else.

Honestly, the answer is not going to a different store. Yeah, it sucks, but the responsibility is on the hobbyist, not the store. If you think about it, for a store to do a proper QT on all fish brought in would be a very expensive and time consuming prospect. It's really not realistic to expect that.

My mistake, lesson learned. I can never get he fish out of the tank so they will have to live with it and thats that. If i lose my regal or powder blue im going to be Fn mad.

You can try lowering the salt level in your tank.....slowly. That should help. Also, if you are not removing the fish, use Garlic Extreme. It will help keep the fish enticed to eat, which will be a good thing as a strong appetite will help the fish to build up the immune system it needs to fight off the parasites. Lastly (again I am giving these suggestions with the thought that you are keeping the fish in the home tank), run a UV sterilyzer in your tank for about 3 weeks. That should be long enought to catch the ich parasites in their swimming state and kill them. IT is true that the UV will also kill some of the beneficial bacteria in your tank, but that is easier to replace that the fish.

IF I were you, I would worry the most about the Powder Blue Tang. Angels tend to be a little stronger than tangs (generally speaking). If it were me and I was in your shoes (and I have been in the past), I would try in this order:

1) Garlic Extreme and a UV sterilyzer at the same time
2) Hyposalinity (slowly.....very slowly).

Good luck!

Spectrum makes an ich shield pellet that could help. I believe it can be used in a reef as long as it does not fall onto corals.

As for the mandarin I have heard that they usually do not carry or get ich as there scales are very thick and ich has trouble attaching to it. Not sure if it is true or not. I know most places don't quarantine mandarins as I believe they do not tolerate copper or hyposalinity well.

Good luck and hopefully things work out okay

Never heard of a Mandarin carrying Ich normally this fish are not prone to diseases, maybe the addition of the Mandarin stress them out?

Guys, let's not spread misinformation about Ich.

Garlic will not treat it.
Hypo is a complicated procedure.
Ich shield pellets are probably snake oil.

All fish should be quarantined, regardless where you get them. I'm hoping there are stores that would do it for you, for a price after you buy the fish, I'd totally sign on.

Mandarins rarely carry ich on their body but they can host ich in their gills.

I would love to know where the "misinformation" is. Ha ha ha. Seriously. No one said garlic was a cure, just that it aids in keeping a healthy appetite......which it does. No one said hypo was easy, sooooo there's no misinformation there either. A guys posted and said his tank has ich and he is not going to pull the fish from the tank. That means at this point we as a group have 2 options, 1) give him potential solutions that can possibly help him and his situation given what he can and can't do, or 2) complain about what he can't do. Being that 2 does not solve any problems, i dont see what good it does, so personally i would rather give some suggestions that might be more realistic for his situation.

Just my .2.

Yep, every time I'm in there many of their fish look terrible. Plus they are expensive, not as much as aquarium adventure. I use divers den now and couldn't be more happy. If I'm paying a premium then I want to know where my fish are coming from.
