Big acrylic tank?

Belgian Anthias

New member
We are going to build this tank in glass or acryl.
In glass we would use 19 mm.
An idea how thick when we make it acrylic?
It is 120cm high.
I can not find the drawing I loaded up.
Try again tomorrow.

yea, thats true.
i didint know much help it would be. you can PM her. her boyfriend owns an aquarium shop and might be able to help you with the thickness that you are asking. you can also post something in the DIY section. there are some acrylic builders there and they might be able to help you with what your looking for too.

Thank you verry much for the replies.
From wat I have read I may conclude that I need minimum 1,5" thick acryl. I think this will be to expensive.
We will make it in glass. The two front windows in extra clear glass if affordable. Thanks again
I will surf the DY sektion to find out how to glue it.

if u think acrylic is expensive.. and ur goin to do it in a low iron glass (starfire)
wait till u get prices for them both and u will see which cost more

Over at one of the other boards one guy made a 1000g tank and his glass IIRC was 2 sheets laminated together which gives the strength of a larger sheet but not as costly as one solid sheet that thick.

Discus: It also depends where he lives as to how much acrylic & glass will differ in cost.

And I aim from Belgium in Europe. Here extra clear glass is 2,5 x to 3 x the price of normal float glass. For the moment acryl is about 1,5x that of glass for the same thikness and since I need to double the thikness it is more expensive than extra clear glass.I will use extra clear only for the two big front windows
Is it correct that I have to use double the thikness of glass when usiong acryl?

Are you that committed to 48" (120cm) height?...30"-36" is still very tall, BUT alot less water pressure,(and much easier to clean, and work on), and therefore not requiring such thick acrylic/glass

Height is inportend. We want to build the tank as high as possible. 48" is the limit for 19mm thick glass. 44" water height+ waves.
We will build that tank specialy for keeping schools of Anthias and we want them to behave naturally. So, the tank must be high.
