im looking for build logs on big sumps . trying to decide how i want to lay out a sump for a 600gal tank with 2 75 gal surges
im not sure if i want to go 1 huge tank layed out with dividers for a fuge , part to hold rock ,etc ...or 2 seperate tanks... right now im thinking 2 tanks . 1 tank to hold about 200-250lbs of live rock it would also be able to hold 250 gals of water i figure the actual rock would need atleast 100 gals but when the surges hit it will rise about 130 gals , and another tank to hold alot of sand and macro . but id like to make something that is well put together . in simple stages .
here is how im thinking of doing the system and how it should work .. i hope
1. water from the main tank over flows into the big tank holding all the live rock . with the amount of water flowing into this tank from the surge over flows it should not need any other "water movers" this tank will have a few pipes coming into it from the big tank over flow to create some turbulance so there isnt any dirt settling into the rocks.
2. after water goes from the rock tank , it flows into the 1st chamber of the actual fuge/sump . it will go into a few filter socks just to help out the system . {i may or may not use them} then the water over flowing will go into the skimmer pickup . i plain on using a hammer head for the skimmer . it is a pm xl2 but i will "t" the pump , so one leg goes into the skimmer , and the other leg feeds the surge tanks this way the surges should fire every 5-8 mins or so ... again ill have ball valves there to control the skimmer and the surges but i think with that big of a pump it should work well
3. then the water coming out of the skimmer will go into the macro stage of the sump this way there is clean water going in there . i read alot about ditrius being stuck to the macro and i also have this problem with my 70 gal so if there is clean water going into this part i should have no worrys ....but anyways . water flowing out of the macro stage will go into a bubble trap where i will have another hammer head pumping water back into the big tank .
im thinking this should work very well . but let me hear any and all opinions .
i did a search and came up with a few but just looking for more if someone knows of something specific ......trying to make it as tidy as possible and compact .... yea i know compact and big tanks do no work well together .
thanks
